Stuntman: Ignition

By MordenNZ (25 September 2007)

Summary
Stuntman: Ignition

Ups: Awesome action on screen at all times so much so that its overwhelming at times, keeps you on the edge of your seat. The arena creator mode keeps things interesting and adds alot of re-playability to the title. Multiclash provides tons of online mayhem and freestyle support for those who just want to chill without the stunt coordinator screaming.

Downs: Very repetitive action, as some of the stunts take multiple times to get the hang of and the game has a bit of a learning curve that might put some people off.

Bottom Line: A solid title with alot of action and plenty of content to keep gamers occupied for months.

Overall rating: 3.5 out of 5 fists   Very Good

FROM THE OPENING SCENE to the final cut, Stuntman: Ignition is nothing less than action packed and adrenaline filled. Stuntman puts you in the cockpit of all types of different vehicles from trucks to motorbikes as a stuntman on the rise to stardom. During the course of your career you go through various scenes performing stunts from an assortment of films so wildly different from each other that you never completely know what's going to be thrown at you next. Starting out as stuntman for a commercial on television, your job is to impress the director so much that he hires you for his next film. So begins your career.

Career mode is is an intense experience, there's no other word for it. As intended, the stunts are spectacular, difficult and at times incredibly frustrating - which is Stuntman's only weakness. The learning curve is very steep; some of the tricks are just so difficult to pull off that after ten or so tries you are ready to put the game away.

Don't. Stick with it, and eventually you will get the hang of it and enjoy it all the more. At the start of every stunt the director outlines what he wants and your ever present stunt coordinator acts as your guide through the game and gives you a rundown of each and every stunt as well as on the fly instructions. Once in the scene you get a countdown and the frantic action ensues. Markers guide you to each stunt and inform you of what exactly it is you will be doing. Following your performance you will be given a star rating out of five. One to four stars requires higher and higher scores but a five star rating requires you to 'string' the entire scene, a process by which one stunt leads into another and the chain isn't broken right until the end, giving you one huge score - a difficult task. Scene completion rewards you with unlocks for the other game modes as well as increasing your global stuntman rating which allows you to try more difficult scenes from your current film and others.

If the idea of taking on a career isn't your cup of tea, then Stuntman offers the Quick Fix mode which pits you into the driver's seat with no questions asked - just pick a scene, select whether you would rather have the director's input or just tackle the scene in your own way and have at it. No rules, just you and the craziest stunts you can think of in the scenes provided. The soundtrack for the Quick Fix mode also adds to the fun and chilled atmosphere of the gametype. Multiclash is Stuntman's fantastic multiplayer addition, which supports Live play as well in case your mates aren't close by. Multiclash has the usual modes you would expect in a car game; your backlot race which pits you against other players in a race around the studio backlots as well as a few other variations. The real fun however comes when you get to the Backlot Battle. The backlot battle is a stunt race which asks you to complete and if posible string together more stunts than your opponents. Here's the catch: by ramming another player you can steal his entire string which will then be added to your total score. This score stealing can get very personal and results in some very fun, tense and fiery matches.

If somehow you manage to get tired of all the other game content Stuntman has one more ace, the arena creator. This creator allows you to use all the unlockable items, ramps and arenas to create the perfect environment for your perfect stunt. The creator gives you a few items to start with but most of them you have to earn through performances in career mode. These include different buildings, trees and all sorts of exploding bits and pieces. The possibilities with the arena creator are endless, especially once you have unlocked some of the more interesting unlockables. Three loops in a row followed by a jump over half a city block? Go for it, your imagination is the limit. Stuntman is a solid game, hindered only by the fact that in can be hard to pick up but once you have the hang of it it's very hard to put down. With the various different modes and entertaining cut scenes, film's and vehicles Stuntman is a great value buy with content to keep you busy for a long time. But, beware Stuntman is not for the faint of heart.
