Mercury Meltdown Revolution

By Gunner (24 August 2007)

Summary
Mercury Meltdown Revolution

Ups: A game that is ideally suited to the console with over 150 mazes. Good level of replayability.

Downs: Some graphical compromises have been made from the original release.

Bottom Line: This is an excellent puzzle game that has found its natural home on the Wii and in particular its control system. A game with heaps of challenging levels and some innovative puzzles. Great fun to play.

Overall rating: 4 out of 5 fists   Great

MERCURY, OFTEN CALLED QUICKSILVER, has held a fascination for man for millions of years. Used by the Ancient Chinese, the Greeks and the Egyptians for both metal working and for its supposed health properties, unfortunately the latter was found to be untrue, and rather than prolonging life it induced a level of madness in some of its imbibers. A madness we assume close to what you get from playing Mercury Meltdown Revolution.

One of the properties of mercury is that it is one of the few metals that, at room temperature, is in liquid form. This, coupled with the metal's viscosity, forms it into blobs. Now take one of these blobs and place in a maze where you have to tilt the entire level to manoeuvre your blob around and you basically have the premise of this puzzle game. First released on the PSP, this game, with some minimal additions has now made its way to the Wii.

Where in the previous release the game relied on slick use of controls to move the teeter board, the Wii allows you to play the game how it should be played: holding the Wii controller side-on and level to the screen holds the board level. Tilt it forward past its sweet spot and the board tips, too. By twisting and turning the controller, you can make the blob of mercury slide and glide through the maze. The A and B buttons allow you to zoom in and out while the D-pad allows you to pan around the maze. The controls are simple and very intuitive.

The game and the real challenge is in the mazes themselves. With over 150 of them there is a lot of gameplay wrapped up in this simple concept. The mazes start off easy enough with moving your blob directly from point A to point B, however soon you will be presented with ramps, moving plates and other fiendish designs that seek to tip you off the board, slow you down or to reduce the size of your blob. Points are awarded for how much of your blob reaches the end.

To add to the complexity of the mazes, the designers have added areas where the surface serves to speed you up or slow you down, but some of the real challenges come when you come up against the colour filter gates. Some gates only open if your blob is a certain colour. To change your colour you need to hit a colour changer object. Sounds easy? Well, to get some colours you need to mix different ones to get the correct hue. This is done by splitting your blob, getting each bit to hit a different colour and then merging them back to form the correct result. This can be a maddening experience as your blobs careen around the board.

Completing each level opens up more of the mazes (a goodly proportion are open from the start) and the more of your blob you finish with the more that are opened to you. Some of the challenges also open some mini games.

Graphically the game is not as good as it is on the PSP and this is to be expected, however the designers have compensated for this by delivering more of a cartoon feel to the graphics. It works well although not as glitzy as the PSP release.

Overall this is a great puzzle game that has a lot of longevity. The challenge and the unique game control system are something that is ideally suited to the Wii. Well worth adding to your collection.
