THIS ISN'T THE FIRST movie-to-game adaptation we will ever see and it definitely won't be the last. But with the release of Superman Returns hitting the box office last year, we were sure that a game to complete the franchise would follow. Superman Returns was a success in theatres but as history attests, that doesn't necessarily mean that a game based on the movie will be any good.
At first glance, Superman Returns: The Videogame doesn't look as visually spectacular as one would expect, even in high definition. The animation is very 'boxy' looking although you can see a subtle likeness between the Superman character (played by Brandon Routh in the movie) and the character in the game. We have to give the developers credit for that at least.
The storyline is also a little different to what we expected. The initial portion of the game partially follows the storyline of the movie with Superman leaving Earth and returning. But that's about where the similarities end. Again, this isn't unusual for a movie to game adaptation. Sometimes it makes sense for developers to alter the storyline of the game to make it more playable and enjoyable.
One of the best features in the game by far is the super powers you get to use as Superman. Flying around as Superman is very cool and a lot of fun. As the game progresses, you learn new abilities like how to use Superman's heat ray and how to fly faster than a speeding bullet. The D-pad allows you to easily switch between the different superpowers with ease and flying is relatively painless to do using both thumbsticks to alter direction.
Combat and targeting objects are some of the trickier and more challenging aspects of gameplay. The first portion of the game is designed to allow you to become familiar with using Superman's powers and to learn how to fly and target objects. When targeting meteors, for example, you need to use the left trigger, which initiates a pointer on the screen. This will glow red if you are targeted on the correct object. By holding down the left trigger, you should be able to destroy your target using one of Superman's special powers.
Depending on which type of meteor it is, you need to fly in close enough to target it and then blast the meteor with either your heat ray or freeze breath. It isn't as easy as it sounds. It's quite a challenging area to complete but it helps to familiarise yourself with Superman's powers for the up and coming battles ahead in the next stage of the game.
Superman is great at aerial combat but he is equally effective on the ground. The next phase of the game finds you controlling Superman as he combats aliens instead of meteors on Warworld. It's an interesting and challenging part of the game and a little less boring than having to fly around Metropolis on the lookout for rogue meteors and the like.
