Caesar IV

By (4 November 2006)

Summary
Caesar IV

Ups: Beautifully picturesque and extremely detailed. Great environmental sounds and easy to use control panel. Wonderfully developed beginner's tutorial mode.

Downs: None.

Bottom Line: By far the greatest release of this series. Level of detail will really impress and the gameplay is immersive, challenging and above all, fun. If you love city builders, you should not be without this title.

Overall rating: 5 out of 5 fists   Perfect

EVER WONDERED WHAT IT would be like to build the city of Rome? Well, Caesar IV can certainly bring you as close as possible to the real thing - virtually, that is. Caesar IV is a game that will really put all of your organisational skills to the test in more ways than one.

In Caesar IV the main object of the game is to build. But of course, it's a tad more complex than just building a city. Depending on the type of game mode you choose, in Caesar IV you can opt to start off as a Governor who slowly builds a city and a reputation for himself, all the while, doing your best to meet the objectives set out for you by Rome. At this point in time, it's easy to see just how involved this game can be. Caesar IV will challenge even the most skilled players but it also has a place for beginners, too.

Running a city in Caesar IV can be extremely challenging. If you enjoy games that require a lot of concentration and the ability to multi-skill, you will absolutely love Caesar IV. There is more to building a city than just laying down bricks and mortar and Caesar IV gives everyone the opportunity to see behind the scenes of what it would be like to build and manage a city and its populous from the ground up. So, do you think you've got what it takes to prove yourself to Rome, Governor? Read on.

Caesar IV has several game modes to choose from. You can choose to play the Campaign mode which starts you off at the bottom of the rung as you work your way up to power and glory. This is probably the easiest option to choose if you're a first timer. The good thing about Caesar IV is that you can ask for advice at any time in the game from your Roman advisors, of course. By clicking on the Advisor's button, you can easily see which areas of your city need attention and which areas are thriving. And by clicking on the various areas of development within your city, you can obtain crucial information that will help you to achieve your objectives. This may range from creating jobs for your populous to building a bath house.

The main area you will use in the game will be the control panel which appears on the right side of the screen. From here you can do anything you need to; create, build, remove, clear land, consult the advisors, and view your city or empire. The layout of the control panel is exceptionally easy to navigate and use. At first glance, it may look a little daunting, but it really isn't. Once you get into the swing of things, it will become second nature.
