The Godfather: The Game

(continued)

advertisement
'Roughing' someone up becomes a tactical skill and it's important you learn how to do this right. Basic movements in the game are pretty easy to follow and use. Your character will learn how to strangle targets, grab and drag them around, and even Garrote your target if need be. You will also learn how to aim at particular body parts so that you don't kill your target before you get the information you need. And should your target prove to be an unwilling participant, you can always make their death look like a suicide by pushing them off the building. Gruesome yet realistic.

Targets will be represented by an icon above their heads so it's easy to get the right person - no point wasting energy on a deadbeat that doesn't know anything. The only downside we encountered was a little repetitiveness during the missions.

Learning how to kill and extract information is one thing, but that doesn't guarantee your success. Money, as they say, is the root of all evil and in The Godfather, power generally equates to who you can kill and how much money you can throw around to get things done. Getting your piece of the action is vital if you want to make it in this world. There are four other mob syndicates (families) sniffing down the same paths as you and your Corleone cronies. Competition is high which means you have to hone the 'smarts' as well as the brawn.

Money is one way you can control the outcome of events. You can muscle local businesses and demand protection money, but remember, you may be infringing upon someone else's money pouch by doing so. If that's the case, expect trouble. Most 'legit' businesses are actually a front for illegal activities, and you can invest in these activities and increase your bank roll. Everyone wants a piece of the pie, and it really is a matter of 'dog eat dog' in the mean streets of New York City. You have to prove you can take as good as you get and create a reputation for yourself. If you're going to rise up through the Corleone ranks, you'll need people to take notice of you.

That's where vendettas fit in. In The Godfather, it's important to make sure you keep your Vendetta Level as low as possible. At times, this will seem like an impossible task. To be able to get where you need to go, you have to hurt people along the way, sometimes even kill them. Most of the time, this will come down to muscling businesses (as previously mentioned) and unfortunately, some of these businesses will be protected by rival gangs. If this happens, the rivals will place a vendetta on you and your Vendetta Level will increase, as will the level of trouble headed your way.

The most important thing to remember is that you can't rise up through the ranks if you're dead.

The Godfather is not an original game idea. There have been other games that incorporate a theme such as the 'mob' taking over a city or territory, characters that rise up through the ranks and gain power and glory as the head of a gang. But the one thing that The Godfather has over many of these games is its link to the movie of the same name. Sometimes, games based on movies can flop. It's an all too common occurrance. Perhaps, because of this we are inclined to give games based on movies a bad wrap. Not so for The Godfather. We were happy to revisit a great story. EA games have delivered you into the hands of the Don. The rest, my friend, is up to you.
