Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble

By (19 April 2006)

Summary
Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble

Ups: Perfect use of dual screen. Sounds like the console version. Looks like the console version. VFX we know and more. Play as Joe and his sister, Jasmine.

Downs: Batteries might run out before you finish.

Bottom Line: Every Viewtiful Joe fan needs this game, and every DS owner needs to play this just to see what the DS is capable of. One of the best-looking and most fun games on the DS to date.

Overall rating: 5 out of 5 fists   Perfect

EVER SINCE VIEWTIFUL JOE launched on the GameCube, a select few have gone crazy over the 21st century's answer to the side-scrolling beat 'em up genre, spouting a port onto PS2, a sequel on both GC and PS2 as well as a four- player beat 'em up, a PSP exclusive and now a title that can only be played on the DS. Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble simply proves that if a developer wants to make a great game for the DS, using a current franchise, it is 100% possible.

Blue seems to have given up on the crime fighting for now and has taken up directing his own bunch of movies. While shooting his latest epic the Madow - the new bad guys - drop in and steal his movie reel. What starts off as a hunt to get the reel back eventually twists and turns into being all about saving Blue's "hero-ness", and with the help from his sister Jasmine, Joe might just be able to save the world all over again.

The only problem that Joe needs to worry about is that he is no longer in the movie world, so his V-Watch no longer works the way it should. When Joe calls out his infamous catchphrase: "Henshin a go-go baby!" nothing happens. With Blue's and Silvia's mind at work, they think that maybe if they start filming Joe he may be able to access his powers once again... and they're right.

With Blue and Sylvia constantly filming, there is a small focus circle in the middle of the bottom screen as if you were watching through the camera itself. While this may seem odd, it's actually a control for a few of the new special VFX attacks. The controls are almost identical to the older GameCube controls. The D-Pad moves Joe and dodges with small jumps and ducks, the A button kicks, the B button jumps, the X button punches and the left shoulder button slows down time for Joe to unleash his more powerful punches and kicks.

Over the duration of the first two worlds - or movie sets as they are this time through - you are slowly taught the rest of Joe's arsenal. Eventually you are able to grab focus of the world and shake the entire screen (which in turn rains junk down onto enemies), swap the bottom and top screens over with a slide of your thumb, or split the world in two for specific puzzles.

During the first few stages you might start thinking that the game didn't really need the second screen. While most of the cut scenes do appear on the top screen and the typical 'you can do it' screen that intro's every small battle with the Madow, the top screen seems rather pointless. That is until you start learning more powers. Small hints, like what you should be on the lookout for, show on the top screen so when the moment arrives you can swap the screens with a slide of your thumb, activate the button or punch in the code and then slide it back to the top screen so you can carry on with the adventure. You won't ever depend on the top screen to get you from A to B, but the puzzles you come across could only be done this way. For every other moment in time the top screen isn't being used; it simply shows the action from a zoomed-in perspective.

Graphically, this is the best title to hit the DS yet. When comparing it to the console version it becomes a mixed bag. While the textures are lower in resolution and the models have less poly's, the smaller screen basically hides these flaws and makes for a VERY decent graphical port.

The only down side is that while the title is pushing the DS to its fullest there are a lot less enemies on screen than Viewtiful Joe fans may be used to. While this might be good for those that found the console versions a little daunting, fans of the series may not find the amount of action they were after. Thankfully, the puzzles and additions to this game will push that worry aside within minutes.

Clover Studios has managed to do everything possible to retain the feel of its predecessors, and to do that they knew they needed the game to SOUND like VJ. Every tune sounds perfect, and if it weren't for the limited voice acting they couldn't have done better - a highlight being the haunted mansion level you stumble across that has a musical score from Resident Evil playing the background.

The Viewtiful Joe franchise seems perfect for the handheld market. Levels are over in minutes, the game autosaves after every stage, and you can power up throughout the experience which may help with the longevity for some people. While there is no multiplayer mode - and that isn't a big loss - this game is worth every cent. Great to see that not all developers are scared of the DS and that some are extremely eager to make a big franchise even bigger by creating a unique and exclusive title.
