Shadow of the Colossus

By (13 March 2006)

Summary
Shadow of the Colossus

Ups: Engaging storyline and fast-paced action and adventure all the way through. There is never a dull moment whether it be the physical challenges or the mental ones. A game that gets right down to the nitty gritty and moves at a pace to which you can easily adjust. Visually stunning backdrops complement the storyline well.

Downs: Boxy animation and some laggy portions of game play.

Bottom Line: This game is one you shouldn't miss. A game that has a little bit of everything; a storyline that is interesting and combat sequences that are fun and exciting to experience. Fighting the Colossi is something you just don't want to miss out on - extreme fun with minimal effort involved.

Overall rating: 4.5 out of 5 fists   Excellent

A LONE WARRIOR ON a horse journeys through breathtakingly beautiful countryside. He carries with him an unusual parcel: a body wrapped in a blanket. It is the lifeless body of a maiden. He arrives at a secret entrance to a crypt and enters.

Finding himself in an enormous hallway, he gets off his horse and places the body onto the altar in front of him. He removes the blanket covering the body. So begins the story of Shadow of the Colossus.

From the very start of this game, it's evident that the storyline is key to understanding your character's purpose and objective. It's important that one pays attention to the first few segments of dialogue between the lone warrior and the gods that guard the realm of the dead. Everything is spoken in a strange language and subtitled in english, grabbing your attention and holding fast.

The game progresses after your character and the gods decide on a wager. Obviously the objective is to win the wager because at the end of it, the gods promise to return the soul of the dead maiden and therefore, bring her back to the land of the living. But to do this, you must risk everything to defeat 16 idols.

Now, we know what you're thinking. Defeating 16 idols doesn't sound too difficult at all so, what's the catch? The idols that the gods speak of surround the outside of the stone hallway where your warrior stands. The "catch" is that the idols represent the 16 Colossi that you must defeat in order to bring life back to the maiden. Shadow of the Colossus is an adventure tale quite unlike any other. And defeating one Colossus seems like a task of mammoth proportions, let alone having to defeat all 16. But casting fear and doubt aside, you adventure off into the unknown with only your horse, your trusty (magical) sword and bow.

Graphically, Shadow of the Colossus is a little boxy looking. The animation is fine but we definitely noticed the textures which give the impression that the graphics are a little dated for a game recently released. That aside, the landscapes and backgrounds used in the game are absolutely stunning with the visual contrasts blending in beautifully with the story.
