Meteos

(continued)

advertisement
The three gameplay options on offer are:

Star Trip: A galaxy-spanning journey in the Metamo Ark. You travel from planet to planet, defeating screens of meteos along the way and eventually ending up at Meteo for the final battle. To keep you on your toes and add a bit of all-important variety, each planet has its own unique characteristics, including screen size, speed and meteos type.

Time War/Meteo War: sets either a time-based or meteo-based limit on the game. Your aim in the time-based game is to get the highest score possible in the given time frame. With Meteo War your goal is to see how quickly you can reach the target of either 100 or 1000 meteos.

Deluge: As the name suggests this is a continuous deluge of meteos with no set time limit, which only ends when you experience a planet nova.

While it operates perfectly as a single-player game, Meteos is strongly geared towards multi-player gaming, and this is clearly evident in the manual, with multiple mention of battles, opponents and competing for scores. There are two options available for multiplayer games: in versus mode up to four DS systems - each with its own copy of Meteos - can go head to head as individuals or as teams. The other option for a multi-player game involves up to four DS systems and only one copy of the game. By using DS Download the 'parent unit' sets up a match for others to download and play. While this is less flexible than VS mode it holds a certain economical appeal.

Graphics are sharp, slick and colourful, although the designers were a bit heavy handed with the paint palette occasionally; some of the screens are quite garish and hard on the eyes. Each planet has its own background, block set and accompanying music track. Sound effects and music are well suited to the game, and you can adjust the balance of music and sound effects to suit your preference.

While Meteos is definitely not for the faint hearted, a little persistence will see you reasonably proficient at lining up and dispatching stacks with the best of 'em. It is one of those games whose appeal increases the more you play it - not the least because you are constantly uncovering some new combo move or feature. Meteos may prove too intimidating for novices but puzzle fans seeking a real challenge should definitely consider adding this one to their collection.
