GAME, SET AND MATCH. Nintendo have finally brought to the court their latest Game Boy rendition of Mario Tennis. Way back in 2001 Camelot Software and Nintendo were pleased to announce the release of their first handheld Mario Tennis game, although Nintendo's great Tennis on Game Boy had alreat identified the game's potential. Four years later Power Tour has arrived, with all the looks and feel of a great Mario sports game.
If you're a novice, amateur, or a pro, this will be able to provide you with a challenge suitable for your skill level. The game itself has three main game types - Power Tour, Exhibition and Multiplayer. For players who are wanting to get straight into the action you have the option of jumping into Exhibition for a quick single-player game against the computer where you will get to chose one of four difficulty settings to put your skills up against; but if pulling out a giant hammer and smashing a tennis ball across the net landing in one of your friend's faces sounds more your game, there is the Multiplayer option. Here you may challenge just one of your friends in a singles match, or grab another two and dive in with your racket by your side for a frantic doubles match using either system link or a wireless adaptor.
The character selection in Exhibition is a tad bare and makes for one major drawback in the game. You have a choice of eight players to choose from, two of which are your Power Tour characters. The Nintendo characters are Mario, Luigi, DK, Peach, Waluigi and Bowser; with every character comes a different skill or attribute, which sets them apart from the rest, such as technique, defence, all-around ability or power. We don't get to see the likes of Toad or Yoshi in this version, which are the most commonly used players if someone wants a character with the speed attribute. The selection is a big cut-back from the original Mario Tennis on Game Boy Color which was packed with over 20 well known faces.
We're now left with the Power Tour game mode. Here you'll start a journey with a choice from two young tennis hopefuls by the names of Clay and Ace. After you've chosen whom to use, you now have to decide what ability path you will take. Ace the tomboy is a technical player, where the young rascal Clay is a power hitter. This is the main fork in the road for the Power Tour. Each character has a completely different story to the other so there is some replayability in that perspective. |
