"WARRIORS.. COME OUT TO play!" If you've seen the movie, you'll know what scene that line is taken from. If you haven't seen the movie, go rent it, watch it and then go play the game. You can of course, play this game without seeing the movie as The Warriors is set three months before the actual movie events. Having said that, it's good to fill in the gaps so you have the background to the game. The game has been developed almost 26 years after the movie was released in 1979.
Rockstar like their brawling, gang and thug related fun and they have certainly played much to their element again with The Warriors. Mugging people, beating them over the heads with baseball bats (or anything you can find) all seems to be the order of the day. The violence and gritty street atmosphere are easily integrated into every game to add to the realism and The Warriors is another addition to this genre.
The opening sequences of the game are taken directly from the movie. The game remains extremely faithful to the cult classic which is cool. Many of the voice overs for the game are done by the original actors. But having seen the movie a few times over the years, one would have to ask the question: how would you make a game out of a movie like The Warriors?. The game is set several months before the Warriors make their way from Coney Island to the big gang meeting called by Cyrus, the influential leader of the largest and toughest gang in New York called the Riffs.
[Movie spoiler alert here!] The meeting called by Cyrus is held during a so-called gang truce which means nobody is supposed to be packing weapons when they attend. Unexpectedly, Cyrus is gunned down by the leader of a rival gang called the Rogues during the middle of his speech, and one of the Warriors inadvertently witnesses the shooting. To cover up their obvious blunder, the leader of the Rogues first tries to shoot the Warrior member but failing that, blames the Warriors instead. The story begins to fall into place. The Warriors are stuck 100 miles from their home turf without weapons trying to get back to Coney Island. The only problem is every gang in the city is looking to kill them for the alleged assassination of Cyrus. And that's only the beginning. Every cop in the city is also on the alert for gangs as word of the meeting gets out. These events occur after the game's storyline begins.
The Warriors integrates part of the movie into its plot but goes one better by giving us a view of things within the Warriors' camp before the shooting of Cyrus. In the single-player game, you start off as a young blood named Rembrandt. What ensues is a series of tests to put the new recruit through his paces to see if you measure up. If you pass the initiation, you get to wear the Warriors colours and become part of the gang.
