The Warriors

(continued)

advertisement
From here on in it's pretty much an entertaining ride into the Warriors' world as a gang thug. The opportunity to play several characters adds variety but tends to get a little confusing in the multiplayer game. Leaving the character Rembrandt behind hands you over to Cleon, who is the Warriors' warlord. Taking the helm as the gang leader puts you in a very different perspective as your objectives become more challenging and involve more risk taking and decision making. Your character is able to issue commands to other Warriors to carry out orders and initiate gang related badness. There are also two different types of game mode to play which are story mode and rumble mode. Story mode follows the more traditional storyline of the game leading up to the where the movie starts. Rumble mode is basically just as it describes - a whole lot of meaningless violence, stealing and mayhem.

As a Warrior, there are many nifty little gang-related tasks to complete such as ripping off shops to make some quick cash or stealing car stereos from cars that have the misfortune of being parked in the Warriors' turf. Running from the cops is also something you'll do often, perhaps too often. The game can be repetitious in parts. You can also do such things as find out how other members of the gang joined the Warriors, or build up your fighting skills by working out on punching bags. Combination buttons appear on the screen to help you along.

There is also a few mini-missions that your character can complete. Playing Rembrandt will give you an opportunity to compete in a gang vs gang graffiti war, where the winner is the first gang to complete the gang's tag. Sounds pretty simple to do but the catch is that the other gangs are allowed to do their best to stop you from completing. That means brawling their way through to you and stopping you from tagging. Other Warriors will be there to help you out, but it's pretty challenging. The other thing to remember is that even if you do win the competition, you still have to fight your way out of a rival gang's turf. That's when the fun begins.

As far as the storyline goes, this is definitely one of the strengths of the game. All of the characters are animated clones of the movie originals which gives the game the authenticity that it deserves. Graphically, there is nothing that stands out other than the great artwork put into the game and created by real-life graffiti artists. The music including soundtrack and background sounds used throughout the game are also taken directly from the movie, another nice touch.

Rockstar have dared to venture into the movie-to-game arena and have managed to revive a cult movie classic. Given the history of some movie-to-game flops that have surfaced recently, Rockstar have come up trumps with The Warriors.
