F.E.A.R.

By (8 December 2005)

Summary
F.E.A.R.

Ups: A game that brings new meaning to the word. Stunning visual and sound effects make this game more than a delight to play. A game that can be played with the expectation of being fully immersed in the world of the paranormal and psychotic, F.E.A.R is worth every jump out of your seat.

Downs: The only down side to F.E.A.R is not playing it!

Bottom Line: If you want bad dreams, play this game at night, alone in the house with the lights off. F.E.A.R is appropriately named and kicks butt on every level. Death lurks around every corner and you just can't get enough. No FPS fan should be without this game.

Overall rating: 5 out of 5 fists   Perfect

A GAME CALLED F.E.A.R. catches your attention pretty quickly, doesn't it? E3 was all over F.E.A.R like white on rice. It was definitely one of the highlights of E3 alongside other highly anticipated titles like Quake 4, Prey, King Kong and Need for Speed: Most Wanted. When a game carries as much hype as F.E.A.R did back then, expectations run high. E3 critics voted F.E.A.R the best action game of 2005. The game's official website even sounds ominous - www.whatisfear.com.

So, let's ponder the question. What exactly is F.E.A.R? F.E.A.R stands for First Encounter Assault Recon. The background of the game is that your character joins the F.E.A.R team as an elite soldier and your mission is to kill everything and ask no questions. You're given state of the art weaponary and armour to get you through. Sound familiar? Well, the story might be similar to one you've heard before, but F.E.A.R is definitely not your average cloned FPS.

The F.E.A.R squad is a special unit of soldiers that deals with situations nobody else will touch, mostly within the realm of the paranormal. What that means is that anything abnormal is considered status quo - ghosts, spirits and the like. It also means that if you're the type of person that thought the movie Scream was scary - you probably shouldn't be playing this game. The R18 restriction was not given to this game lightly. You have been warned.

Once you've installed the game, mapped your keys and sorted out the game settings, you're set to feel the F.E.A.R. The music will definitely help to achieve this. Background sounds reminiscent of something from Resident Evil go to work quickly. But enough of the horror nostalgia kick, let's get to the killing!

Your character starts off being introduced to other members of the F.E.A.R team in a cut-scene at the beginning of the game. The cinematics are extremely well done and the whole feel of the game right from the start is more like being in a movie sequence rather than a game. The emphasis placed on the whole 'movie' feel in F.E.A.R dominates but it's all extremely entertaining. If we wanted to focus on how good F.E.A.R looked, we could write about it all day. The textures and animation are superb. We tried really hard to look for a flaw, anything at all at this stage. We came up kind of empty handed.
