KILLER 7 IS BASED on an assassin, Harman Smith. Smith is unlike your average assassin, the main reason being is that he is wheelchair-bound. Although unable to walk, Smith is able to call upon an individual from a team of seven to carry out missions for him. The team is Killer 7.
What makes this unique is that K7 is made up of Harman's split personalities. Unlike Harman, the K7 team are all able-bodied.
Garcian Smith is known as the "Cleaner". If one of K7 is taken out, then Gacian will not only collect the fallen member, but he can also resurrect him.
Dan Smith carries a revolver and has the ability to fire the "demon shell'. This special attack is capable of taking out enemies with a single shot.
Kaede Smith is the only female member. She carries an automatic and can zoom in on enemies. Kaede can also blast a shower of blood from her wrist.
Con Smith is a simple guy. He packs two pistols and can fire and reload quicker than the rest.
Coyote Smith also has a revolver that can cause a lot of damage and has the ability to jump like no other, and can pick any lock presented to him.
Kevin Smith weapon of choice is the knife. He can throw them continuously and also has the ability to make himself invisible by taking off his sunglasses.
Mask de Smith, although he does not look like your average assassin, does pack two grenade-launching guns that can cause damage on a large scale. Definitely the most effective of K7.
Like Smith, during gameplay you can call on any member of the "team". As each member is unique in his own way, some tasks are designed specifically to the individual, so in order to complete the game you will need to utilise all of the K7 characters.
The aim of the game is to get through an army of zombie like enemies who come fully equipped with self destructing bodies and laugh to indicate they are nearby, or breathe heavily if running towards you. These zombies are called "heaven smile". They are a legion that has been let loose to destroy anything in their path. Your mission is to ultimately find and destroy what ever it is that is unleashing them.
To help you along the way, you are guided by Iwazaru, who appears like a puppet on a string and continually repeats the same first few lines. You can also seek help from characters who provide cryptic clues to the tasks at hand.
To help you get more of a feel to the game, Killer 7 also has psychotic music and images which jump out at you. It also has gruesome scenes of people being slaughtered and enemies that explode with blood oozing from them. You can use this blood (the enemies) to your own advantage; in fact you need it to create serum, to increase your character's abilities. To further increase your chances of getting blood, shoot anything but the torso. Take out as many body parts as possible, but you will need to finish them off before they get close and attack you by exploding before your eyes.
This game, from the very beginning, is unique. The developers have done well to create a clean-cut 3D environment and soundtrack, which perfectly sets the chilling tone of the game. Some of it is a bit over-the-top, though, and may even put some players off. Others might find it this so intriguing that they continue to play to see what lies ahead.
Another factor that makes this game unique is that you have no control of the direction you are heading. The path which you run along is predetermined; you can only choose which way to go when at an intersection of the game. As the path is predetermined, unlike most games that use the left thumb stick to navigate the character, K7 uses the cross button to run and the triangle button to about face. This presents another issue. If you find yourself being attacked by a number of zombies you can't freely run around to attack. You have to stand your ground or run back from whence you came and choose a member of K7 that packs more punch than your current selection.
Another interesting thing about the control is the fact that in order to shoot anyone, you are required to carry out the following combination. R1 brings up the crosshairs followed by L1 to expose the otherwise invisibly zombies. The left thumbstick aims, and finally the cross button is used to shoot. Also if you want to shoot with the gun fully loaded then you have to give the right joy stick a bit of a nudge to reload.
The game has some long loading times and some not that far apart. This is made even more frustrating when you take into consideration how intersections work. When at an intersection the game comes to a complete halt to display the directions available, even if the only way is forward.
This game has the potential to be a classic and the cover certainly gave that impression, but it has been let down by some wayward thinking in game design. |
