MARVEL PUBLISHED THE COMIC, 20th Century Fox made the movie and now Activision has released the Fantastic Four video game to PS2.
Fantastic Four is a story of four unlikely heroes, an inventor/scientist Reed Richards, his ex-girlfriend Susan Storm, and two former NASA pilots Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm.
It all began with a mission to space where the crew encounter a cosmic storm that alters their DNA, and changes their lives forever. The crew has now been left with uncanny super powers; Reed Richards now has the ability to stretch his body in anyway shape or form, and is now known as Mr Fantastic.
Susan Storm now has the power of invisibility, can generate force fields and fire sonic like blast, and is now known as the invisible woman.
Johnny Storm has the ability to transform himself into flames, and when transformed can also levitate, and is now known as the "human torch".
And finally Ben Grimm, who has become a solid rock like mass and is virtually indestructible, and is now known as The Thing.
Together they have formed the Fantastic Four.
The game starts out like the movie where Ben Grimm is preparing samples outside the space station. From there the game progress through a similar storyline with additional scenes added.
The first few stages consist of the gamer going through training, first having to use Mr Fantastic, followed by Human Torch, Invisible Woman and finally The Thing. This allows the gamer to get a feel for each of the abilities that each member of the Fantastic Four offers. Although each member has special powers and combinations that can be carried out, you will probably find that most of the time you are either using the super power or just bashing at the buttons with no real technique.
The abilities of each member are good in their own way, and can be upgraded during play. Mr Fantastic and The Thing are good for those close range/hand to hand combat and offer a lot more power, as opposed to the Invisible woman and Human Touch who can attack at distance but not with as much power.
The game sets objectives which need to be completed to earn points and bonuses. Sometimes these are carried out by only one member, sometimes all. When on a mission and doing it as a team, you will find that the objectives set are specifically designed for each member on the mission. The objectives can only be completed by the gamer so be sure you swap to the right team member or you may miss your objective.
The game then continues through a variety missions and challenges. You will come across many opponents and their leader that you need to beat in order to reach the final stages of this game.
As for the look and feel, well, this game is definitely not up there, and needs a lot of work. For example, the invisible woman and human torch offer the ability to target opponents, but due to the poor design and camera angles you find that you can't see what you are targetting. Because of this, you just end up using (where possible) Mr Fantastic or The Thing, purely because of their hand to hand combat abilities.
This game also only offers a two-player mode. We're not sure why, when, sometimes a mission is carried out by all four.
This game is aimed at the young or young at heart. It requires no real skill and can be completed very quickly. It is enjoyable at times, if you like the "smash your opponents" concept, but apart from that there is not much to cheer about. |
