Champions of Norrath: Return to Arms

By (1 May 2005)

Summary
Champions of Norrath: Return to Arms

Ups: A great game for anyone wanting to spend time killing, looting and levelling. Senseless hack and slash with a hint of EverQuest thrown in makes it easy to spend countless hours at the console.

Downs: Recovering from a death in the game is a little more difficult than it should be. Some of the NPC voice-overs are a tad irritating and some of the gameplay can be repetitious.

Bottom Line: Highly recommended for any RPG enthusiast looking for a little hack and slash action without the restraints of high end levelling and role playing.

Overall rating: 4 out of 5 fists   Great

WHAT IS IT ABOUT hacking and slashing your way to oblivion that appeals so much? Whatever it is, Sony has its finger on the pulse by churning out games like Champions of Norrath: Return to Arms. Imagine if you could take away all the time and effort that goes into building a character in an RPG game, and jump ahead of all the not so exciting stuff? Champions of Norrath: Return to Arms delivers all of this and more.

Champions of Norrath: Return to Arms is the second instalment of the Champions' EverQuest spinoff. Think of EverQuest minus the exercise of having to go 'LFG' (looking for group) or upskilling in tradeskills. Return to Arms really is a lot more than just a hack and slash game and is really aimed at those adventurers who are on the lookout for something a little less serious.

Don't worry if you're not familiar with EverQuest. The good thing about Return to Arms is that you can play this game without ever having played EverQuest. And Return to Arms is very easy to play. Once you pass the first two levels, youre well on your way to greater and more adventurous encounters.

The storyline is pretty basic to follow. The game begins with an opportunity to choose which character class you want to play. The range of character classes to choose from has increased since the first Champions of Norrath release, so that's a bonus. You also have a mixture of races as well as classes ranging from Wood Elves to Erudites, each class with unique characteristics. Depending on which side of the road you wish to travel (good or evil) the game can be played very differently. Of course, unlike the MMORPG EverQuest, you dont really need to spend too much time deciding which character to play. And if you just happen to have a character already saved in memory from the first Champions of Norrath game, importing your character into Return to Arms is a click away.

There is, however, something you may want to consider when you are choosing what type of character to play. If you're starting out, it would be recommended to play a melee type character who doesnt have to worry about spell casting. Spell casting types might find it difficult to filter through their spells with only two spells to use at any one time. For those of you adept at playing spell casters, this will be both a blessing and a curse. Choosing where to put your hard earned points after levelling up suddenly becomes quite important so try to make your decision with this in mind.

Champions of Norrath: Return to Arms does have one other interesting aspect - online gameplay. If your PS2 console has the ability to go online, all you need to do is hook up a network cable to the back of the console, slot in some basic network settings (DNS numbers etc) and Bob's your uncle. If youre intending on playing this game solo (that is, you dont intend on playing offline with anyone else) then online game-play would be seriously recommended. However, if online play really isn't your thing, or if your console doesn't support online gameplay, never fear. One of the best aspects of Return to Arms is the amount of fun you can have in multiplayer mode offline.
