Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone

By (5 April 2005)

Summary
Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone

Ups: Graphics are crisp and well done. Sound compliments the storyline. Enjoyable hack and slash fun for all levels of RPG adventurer. A must for all D&D fans.

Downs: Typical D&D style of game play may be too restrictive for adventurers looking for more room to move in the game. Some patience needed for customising navigation.

Bottom Line: Great stuff if you like to play to script and follow along. This is not a game for those RPG fans who like to create their own adventures. Other than that, Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone is a great source of fun and definitely recommended for any RPG enthusiast.

Overall rating: 3.5 out of 5 fists   Very Good

FORGOTTEN REALMS: DEMON STONE is every bit the D&D fanatic's dream, a story that is just waiting for you to slot somewhere into its pages. Playing a D&D based game is much like drawing from a template: as long as you follow the path before you, the goal is always within reach. Well, most of the time.

The very essence of what makes a game like Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone so engaging is the fact that you dont really have to do too much to have fun. If what youre looking for is a good ol' hack and slash game with a bit of a storyline to plod along to, you're in for a treat. The basic plot of Demon Stone revolves around a wizard named Khelbun Arunsun who has magically found a way to imprison the Slaad Lord Ygorl and Cireka, the Githyanki General, in a demon stone. Unfortunately, both of these fiends manage to break free of the stone and are now unleashing hell upon the Realms. Guess whose turn it is to try and sort out the mess they caused?

The game itself is wonderfully put together. Graphically it is nothing too astounding but the graphics are well done and appear very crisp on-screen. The sound compliments the storyline all the way through. Atmosphere adds a lot to the game, but don't be expecting thrills on the edge of your seat or anything of that magnitude. Whilst Demon Stone delivers on every level you would expect from an old fashioned hack 'n' slash adventure, the novelty of hacking and slashing your way through absolutely everything can soon wear thin.

Demon Stone puts you in the driver's seat of three characters. Yep, that's right, you get to let loose on all the bad guys playing three very different character types - a warrior named Rannek, a sorcerer named Illius and a half Drow, half Wood Elf Rogue named Zhai. Mastering all three is well worth the effort as there are portions of gameplay that are suited for each individual character. The better you are at playing each character, the easier it is to progress.

As you can probably guess, Rannek is good at smashing things and basically slaughtering everything in his path, Illius is the magic user with nifty spells and ranged attack capabilities, and Zhai is the acrobatic throat-slitting type that hides in shadows. Each character has unique strengths and to cut a long story short, you won't get very far if you don't spend time learning how to use each character.
