When you get a chance to actually play, try your hand at shooting something, anything for that matter. Try aiming straight for a start. Once you have spent the 5 or so hours learning how to do that, you might be able to muster hitting one of the 15 bad guys shooting at you. Shooting at things in this game is supposed to be the easiest part of it being a FPS and all that, right? Apparently not. Patience is a virtue you just don't seem to have when you pop this little beauty in. All in all, you keep wanting things to get easier, but - they just don't.
So far we have no real story or background (other than what you may have missed or skipped at the beginning) and nothing really outstanding in the graphical or gameplay areas. It's starting to look a little bleak here, isnt it? Well, not all is lost because EA made the great choice of getting Paul Oakenfold onboard, remember? Tap, tap, tap those feet away... killing someone in the next few hours just might be bearable.
There is a few nifty things that you can do using the GoldenEye, such as look through most objects (kind of like X-ray vision except with one eye) and hack. Yes folks, you can hack with your GoldenEye. As silly as this may sound, the hacking capability can be quite useful when you need to open locked doors. And you can also do such things as use other humans as shields (well, why not?), throw grenades and watch things go boom, or just dual wield two magnums and shoot the place to bits. Having a gun in each hand certainly does add to the momentum of the game - but killing everything that moves is not awe inspiring gameplay.
Having a barrage of different weapons helps push the fun factor up a notch, but how many ways can you shoot your enemy and still say you're having fun? Adding the Cyborg aspect to the character of GoldenEye is a neat little touch, and does give you the room to explore and expand on character detail, but it just doesn't butter the bread. All in all, one is left feeling a tad empty, like there should be something more but it just never seems to arrive.
The thought of dealing to one or several of the good guys really isn't enough to give this game an edge. The sound was better than average thanks to Paul Oakenfold's mastery but even this aspect doesn't deliver much to rave about, excuse the pun. 007 may be moving on in the universe of GoldenEye but we sincerely hope that there wont be a follow up in the near future. This piece of gold has certainly lost its glitter. |
