The selection of treasure in the game is just as rich as the game environment. In designing Sacred, Ascaron seems to have picked the best ideas from the current generation of RPG games and woven them into their own game's setting. This includes the crafting of items (and re-crafting them as well), item sets and slotted items. Just about anything can have slots, including weapons, gloves, boots, shoulder guards, etc. You can put other magic items into these slots, including rings and amulets, and this opens up a lot of possible combinations for players.
All characters have the ability to set up combos that combine different spells or skills into one combo (you need to visit a wizard to set these up). As you advance in experience you get more combo slots. These can be quite useful as you battle increasingly tougher monsters, both in numbers and size. Weapon slots are much the same with more slots being made available as you advance in levels.
At first glance the list of available spells seems limited, however you soon learn that by using combos you can create a chain of spells that are flung out in a string with one button push. This creates a whole new challenge as you learn to find the best sequences and combinations. You are limited on how fast you can cast spells by how long it takes to recharge your magic power. This is determined by the level of spell, magic items, certain skills and also character attributes. If you are a magic user, you need to balance all these factors every time you level up.
Spells and skills are picked up from monsters and elsewhere, and are in the form of icons. If they are no use for your particular character they can be exchanged at the town wizard on the basis of 4 for 1. Some of the spell effects are a bit insipid (the fireball covers an annoyingly small area), but overall the effects are quite pretty.
As you explore you start to discover the incredible depth of this game. You are encouraged to explore every nook and cranny, as you can find caves and dungeons just about anywhere. Some are parts of quests while others just add to the flavor of the game. |
