Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup

By (5 December 2003)

Summary
Harry Potter: Quidditch World Cup

Ups: It's Quidditch in a videogame of its own!; Detailed graphics; Easy learning curve; Loads of personality.

Downs: Controlling the players can get confusing; Inability to skip special move cut-scenes gets irritating; Some parts of the gameplay need more refinement.

Bottom Line: Quidditch World Cup is a frenetic sports game that places you in the middle of the action. The game is a bit of of a mixed bag but in the end, is fun to play.

Overall rating: 3.5 out of 5 fists   Very Good

RIDING ON THE WAVE of Harry Potter popularity, Quidditch World Cup is a fast-action game played while flying on broomsticks. Taken from the Harry Potter books and films, Electronic Arts have attempted to port the game of Quidditch from the films to the Playstation 2, and have created a game with some flaws but one that is ultimately enjoyable.

In Quidditch, there are two teams playing to win. Seven players per team: three chasers, two beaters, one seeker, and one keeper. There are 4 balls to interact with: One quaffle for scoring, two bludgers for defending, and the nimble Golden Snitch. How it works is that three chasers use the quaffle to throw through one of the three opponent team's vertical hoops to score goals (worth 10 points), the two beaters hit the bludgers (which fly around at their own will) at the opponents and the seeker looks out and tries to catch the Golden Snitch (which also flies around of its own volition). When the Golden Snitch is caught, the catcher's team is awarded 150 points and the game ends. Quidditch is similar to other ball sports like soccer, but the extra balls and the fact that you're flying around on broomsticks make it somewhat more unique.

In the video game, there are three different modes of play: Hogwarts entails competing against the different house teams from the "Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry" for the Hogwarts Cup, which acts as more of a large tutorial on how to play quidditch including explanations and mini-games to help you practise; World Cup, which lets you play with nine teams from around the world to compete for the Quidditch World Cup; and Exhibition, which allows you to play a simple versus game against the CPU or a human player. There is also the Inventory in which you can load and save games using the Remembrall, view quidditch cards you have earned, and view special moves you have acquired.

In the Hogwarts mode, there are familiar faces from the films such as Harry Potter, one of the Weasley twins, Oliver Wood, Draco Malfoy, and the Slytherin chaser who looks like he's had a few too many bludgers to the head, Marcus Flint. When you first start the Hogwarts mode, you are to choose a house team to play as. After selecting your team, your teammates teach you how to play quidditch through various mini-games. By breaking team, house and school records, you can earn various quidditch cards which in turn unlock special moves and fields to play on. Playing in the Hogwarts Cup eases you smoothly into the game and very soon you are comboing passes, stealing the quaffle, smacking bludgers and scoring goals.

After the completion of the Hogwarts Cup, the World Cup mode is unlocked. This is where you really test your skills with nine international teams competing for the Quidditch World Cup. You also get the chance to choose the difficulty that you want to play at. The difficulty setting also affects the speed of the game: If you play a match using the Cosmo 260 broomstick and then play a game using the Firebolt, you'll feel a slight speed increase as well as the AI getting much harder and fiercer. Competing in the World Cup means that you'll be playing 16 rounds against the other teams and the winner of the World Cup is the team whose total points from all of the matches is the highest overall. The World Cup feels like it drags on a bit, especially since you have to play every team twice (once on your team's home field, once on the opponents' home field). At times the quidditch games can get tedious and drawn out but we'd say the same for other sport games, as well as the fact that playing against the CPU isn't as exciting as playing against a human.

The controls of the game are basic: controlling your player is done through the left analog stick, and that also aims your passes, tackles, shots on goal and bludger attacks, which are performed with various buttons (or the right analog stick if you prefer that to pressing buttons). As you play the game, depending on how well you do you earn the ability to perform moves such as dodging, hitting bludgers and performing special moves and special team moves. With special moves you can either steal the ball off an opponent by aiming a cursor over them or you can slam the ball into the opponent's goal by being in range and holding down a combination of the L1, R1 and circle buttons. If you do really well in a game, you gain the ability to perform a Special Team Move where by pressing the L2 and R2 buttons when in possession of the quaffle, your team performs an elaborate air ballet on broomsticks in order to slam the quaffle through one (or even two) of the hoops. All of these special moves when executed start up a very short in-game cut scene of your team member performing the move in flashy and elaborate ways. The problem with them however is that you can't skip the scenes, and if your opponent performs one on you, there's no way to dodge or defend.

Bludgers aren't as active as they could be in this game. If you are on defense, pressing the square button will make one of your beaters wind up and smack a bludger which you now try to control to hit the opponent's quaffle-carrier. It's quite difficult to control the bludger and in some ways it's easier and more effective to just tackle the opponent. When a bludger is coming towards you, the game makes it harder for you to avoid it. That is you can't dodge or pass and your character's movements are restricted more-so than usual but you can take a shot at the goal (which proves only useful if you are close enough to the hoops). Bludgers in the hands of the CPU are dangerous, even on the Cosmo 260 difficulty level!

All of these special moves and combos can affect the Golden Snitch. At the top of the screen is the Golden Snitch bar, which increases in increments when you score goals and generally do well (getting large combos will make it increase even faster). When the two halves of the Golden Snitch bar come together, the Golden Snitch then surfaces and the teams' seekers try to catch it. In order to catch the Golden Snitch, you compete with the opponent team's seeker and must follow the Snitch's golden path. By ramming into the other team's seeker, you can knock them back in order to get ahead. You can also get a boost in speed by pressing the X button and the amount of which you can boost is determined by how large your half of the Golden Snitch bar was when the Snitch was released. By staying in the middle of the golden path, your boost meter recharges and when you've finally caught up to the Golden Snitch, you can attempt to grab it by pressing the circle button.
