Age Of Mythology: The Titans

By Gunner (20 October 2003)

Summary
Age Of Mythology: The Titans

Ups: Lots of new goodies including new spells and units; Titans themselves are awesome to use.

Downs: The devastating effect of the Titans means that once you have one the game is about over.

Bottom Line: A worthy expansion pack for a great game. The additions mean hardened players will be reworking their established strategies.

Overall rating: 4 out of 5 fists   Great

AGE OF MYTHOLOGY IS one of our all time favourites here at Gameplanet. It's real time gameplay blended traditional unit and empire building with a vast array of mythical units and some pretty cool spells that added a lot of spice to the game. When an expansion was announced there was naturally a stampede to be the first to play the new civilization that comes with the game - the Atlanteans. Promised was a whole load of new units including the huge Titans. Does it deliver?

The Atlanteans have three main gods (Kronos, Oranos, and Gaia) and each of them have their own set of demi-gods and units. To name a few there are automatons (a sort of medieval robot), spear throwing eagles, flame thrower siege weapons and juggernauts. All of these play an integral part in a fantastic new campaign.

This new campaign sees the Atlanteans seeking to re-establish their previous glory and in so doing letting lose evil upon the lands once more. From the Island remnants of the once proud Kingdom you will travel once again to the Norse Lands, battle the Greeks and cross the sands of the Egyptian empire. This new campaign represents a real challenge with some interesting missions and big battles that will find you unlocking the secrets of the Titans themselves.

These huge mythical beasts tower above everything else on the battle field and their stomping and smashing sends units flying through the air and they make short work of the toughest of buildings. In normal gameplay, to construct a Titan requires an additional age that will unlock the secret of the Titans. You are then granted a Titan gate that you can place anywhere on the map. The gate however needs to be uncovered by your villagers before the Titan is released. The more villagers you assign to this task the quicker this is done however despite this it takes a lot of time to complete. The additional resources required to research this new age and the need to divert villagers to the task of uncovering the gate means you can not put as much resources into building an army. If you chose the Titan path to victory you will find yourself very vulnerable to attack until the gate is open.

Once released the Titan is almost unstoppable. With a huge amount of hit points it brushes off attacks by humans and is hardly hurt by other myth units. The only effective defense against a Titan is to build your own one. This would be one of our major gripes however. Once a player has completed a Titan they have all but won the game as nothing can really stand against them. On the other side of the ledger however the time and resources required to build one make you a prime target. This new unit also makes multi-player games all the more interesting and will see many players having to rethink their winning strategies.

One other issue with the Titan is it's inability to cross water or utilise passages to other land masses. It can be quite frustrating during island multi-player games to find that all the resources you directed to building a Titan were all for naught as you can't get him onto the enemies island - so be warned!

There are some great new spells available to the Atlanteans. There is the spider egg spell that allows you drop eggs in an area most used by your enemies' human units. These eggs then hatch and burrow into the ground waiting to pounce on unsuspecting passerby. There is also an awesome implode spell that creates a ball of negative energy that sucks in units and buildings alike. One nasty new spell is the deconstruct spell that allows you to un-build an enemy building. It can be frustrating to husband your resources to build a fort and then having it pulled apart by an enemy spell! A lot of these spells can be cast multiple times however this feature does not seem to apply to the established races.

Overall Age of Mythology: The Titans has some great new features and units. If you have the original this expansion pack is one you must get your hands on. It adds a lot more to the game experience as well as considerable longevity to the original.
