Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

By (29 November 2002)

Summary
Harry Potter And The Chamber Of Secrets

Ups: Visual effects are nicely done; Entertaining cut-scenes; Nice characater interaction; Characters remain true to their movie counterparts; Easy to follow in-game instructions.

Downs: Could be a little more challenging for the older audience.

Bottom Line: Great for kids, a little slower for adults but a fun ride all the same. A definite Xmas stocking choice for the younger generation and a must for hardcore Harry Potter enthusiasts.

Overall rating: 4 out of 5 fists   Great

GOT YOUR WAND AND Spell book at the ready? Then you've come prepared for an adventure of super-magical proportions. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is all about magic. If you enjoy games where magic and adventure make up the essence of the gaming experience, you'll love Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Fans of the movie and the books will ultimately find this game a great addition to their collection not to mention the great work that EA has invested into making this game appeal to all age groups.

The game-play of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets very much mirrors that of games like Alice. Movement and instruction are very similar with cut scenes providing the necessary hints to get you on your way or to assist you through a particularly challenging area. Although simplistic in its approach, the game does have its surprising moments offering enough of a challenge for even the greatest Wizard.

To start off the game has a rather peculiar beginning with a flying Ford Anglia driven by Harry's friend Ron. Ron comes to rescue Harry from his awful stepfamily that imprisons Harry without the use of magic in their home. Ron then takes Harry away to another place where Harry meets up with his other friends from Hogwarts. Before this happens, Harry is secretly warned by a house Elf not to return to Hogwarts. Should he do so, he would find himself in mortal danger. Without giving too much away, Harry then embarks on his first encounter with a rather nasty looking willow tree that likes to devour flying cars and children. Sound interesting? It gets better.

Keeping in mind that underneath all that magic, Harry is still pretty vulnerable. At certain times Harry's stamina may run a little low, and during these times Harry will be required to locate sustenance to keep him on his feet. Its up to Harry to find out exactly how to replenish that stamina. Of course, like any young and enterprising wizard, currency and more importantly the use of it is another important matter not to be overlooked. Try your hand at uncovering a group of Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans on your journeys.
