Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2

(continued)

advertisement
The Need For Speed games could really never be classed as 'simulations', the Hot Pursuit branch of the series even less so. The cars handle quite well but are prone to sliding across the track as if they are covered in water. Another factor is that car damage seems to be lacking in this title. The most you can see is the bonnet of your car being raised after big crashes and even that doesn't seem to affect your cars handling or acceleration.

Next up is perhaps the most crucial element, the police AI. The first Hot Pursuit game was criticised largely because of how easy it was to elude the police altogether. In the sequel however things have changed significantly with the police acting very aggressive. They won't simply ride along side you, they'll smash their own car into you at over 250km/h and then they'll try to push you into oncoming traffic. You really need to stay on your toes against the police especially if they call in some backup which can include an additional police car, a roadblock, tire spikes and last but certainly not least; the helicopter which will drop large canisters onto the road which should you hit at a high speed will detonate and send you flying for miles.

Finally this game comes packed with game modes. Hot Pursuit mode puts you in over 30 very different events, ranging from delivering a Lotus Elise to a specific point on the track to being the cop and filling your quota of arrests within the allotted time. Championship mode is similar to Hot Pursuit mode except in this mode it's all about racing. Then there is Quick Race for those who haven't got the patience to play in one of the other modes and sets you on a random track against a random selection of cars. Last but not least is Single Challenge where you can spend all the NFS points that you earn from completing the events in the various modes. You can unlock tracks and cars for your own use in Single Challenge or you can even go head to head with a friend in two player split screen mode.

Once again bringing us back to the thrill of eluding the cops in some very nice cars Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 is a fantastic title. If you want a sim then this isn't it, if however you want to race some very expensive cars at insane speeds then this is a game you must own.
