Go back to the start of this review and contemplate working out the original question, because some of you may not want to read this after the hype you have received. Yes there are plenty of options, there is probably the best Hell in a Cell game you will ever play, and those entrances... who can forget those entrances? But the glitches... oh the glitches... and those controls. We all loved the grappling system of the older wrestling games, so why give us something that not only are we not used to, but that we don't like. The 'B' button is your attack button and your 'A' button is your grapple button. Most people enjoy the grapple then decide the fate of their struggling opponent with plenty of moves ready at the push of a direction and button, but sadly now all you have is 5 grappling moves. 'A' by itself, then 'A' with the 4 basic different directions. You have a hefty attack and a light attack. There is just not enough variety in the moves. Surely there must be some saving grace with the controls... the irish whip maybe. This is pulled off by simply holding 'A' and 'Y' together and in the direction you want to whip them. Sounds easy enough, and by all means it should be, but with 'Y' also being the run button it makes it more like a 50/50 chance one of you is going to run in the direction you are pointing.
Another stuff up is that 'A' joined with 'X' not only picks up a weapon off the canvas, but also turns your opponent over if they are lying on the ground. This doesn't seem to pose much of a problem if the weapon you are picking up is nowhere near your opponent, but if it IS anywhere near then good luck getting that trash-can/sledgehammer/chair. Speaking of weapons there are plenty to be thrown about -- if only they would just stay still! There is some crazy collision detection going on in this game. Sometimes you will have no problem at all, however most of the time weapons will slide/vibrate themselves around the ring or randomly fly out of the ring with only the slightest touch. Luckily this glitch is only with the weaponry as things could've ended up REAL bad.
The graphics are a saving grace with this game. Models created with an average of 3500 polygons help recreate the superstars some of you are used to seeing on your screens at home, and it seems Yukes have used as much skill as they could to texture the models with spectacular lighting and dirt-mapping which basically means parts of a wrestler's pants are shiny while dirty patches aren't. Leather looks like leather, skin looks like skin, baggy clothing acts like baggy clothing and hair moves about and drapes over shoulders for the likes of Christian/Edge and any female character. Animations are pulled off realistically and you can't get past those superb entrance sequences. Fans of WWE will truly be thankful for some of the recreated scenes and effort put into some of this game, graphically anyway.
Sound is well... shocking really. The opening music is great, and most of the entrance music is identical to that seen in the show, but that's it. The menu music is 80's style and the music during the match is just annoying. The ding sound when you kick/punch someone in the groin isn't a deep enough sound to be effective. There are commentators that sit ringside yet there is no commentary, although with the commentary seen in other wrestling games this is probably a good thing. The crowd is normally random, except for when you pull off a finisher move -- then you are guaranteed at least an attempted cheer with camera flashes if not an overly excited scream of joy.
Multiplayer is where the fun is, that is if you can find someone else eager enough to give this game a chance. If you can then you will be pleasantly surprised at the fun that can be had. Ignore the sound, and just focus on beating your mate senseless, stealing his belts and mocking him with your victory poses. The Royal Rumble would normally be where most of the joy would be had, but miss this out if you want multiplayer fun, because this time around if you get thrown out, that's the end. No coming back.
This game is for the hardcore wrestling fan who has a few extra dollars kicking about. Definitely a renter for when you want to be rowdy, but is it worth the purchase? We don't think so. |
