BEING THE GAME THAT created the 'Survival Horror' genre, it was almost certain for Resident Evil to spawn a number of copycats and just as many sequels. However, who would have guessed that Capcom would re-create the original game from the ground up to scare a brand new generation of gamers on the Nintendo Gamecube?
A new 60Hz option is a nice warm welcome to the new design, and after the standard developers/publishers logo comes the brand new zombie in a bodybag cutscene. It has nothing to do with the storyline, it's just a snippet into what to expect and is cold, dark and downright chilling. Once you have selected which character you're going to play as, try and forget everything you ever knew about Resident Evil. At the same time, try and remember some of the scares that got you addicted to the game in the first place (just bear with me). Why would you want to remember the frightening parts? Because Capcom knew you would be expecting them..... and they've done something about that.
The newbie Resident Evil players among us will be asking "what is this game really about, and how does it manage to scare and captivate such a large audience of people?" Well, we'll start at the beginning. The intro lets you in on everything you need to know. People in Raccoon City have been eaten..... but by what? A special forces unit known as S.T.A.R.S Bravo Team were flown in by chopper to investigate exactly whats going on. However, they went missing and the Alpha Team is flown in to see what went wrong -- Alpha Team being the team that bears future heroes to be Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine.
Your team finds the helicopter of the Bravo Team and only one dead body inside. Madness ensues as the tension mounts in the mist filled forest... I won't go right into detail here as the people who have played the original know what's attacking and there is no point in ruining it for the others. Your team is then chased into an old, rundown mansion but minus a few members. Where have the others gone and why does the mansion smell like dead flesh? The only objective in this game is to find your team and escape the mansion alive. It IS possible, but you'll be on the edge of your seat the entire game.
Now before anyone speaks up and raises the "it's not really that scary" point, maybe you would like to turn off all the lights, shut all of the curtains, turn it up loud and make sure you're playing at a time when there should be no distracting noises. Concentration is needed and if it means slipping into a state of "this isn't a game, this is life" then do so. To get the most out of this game is to be in the moment, any less may cause extreme frustration when something that should've frightened you didn't because you allowed your younger sibling to annoy you as you played.
Players can select which character they want to play with and depending on which is chosen a different storyline through the same plot is taken. Pick Chris and expect a harder game, less space to carry stuff and a few decidedly harder to possess weapons. Picking Jill doesn't necessarily mean you'll get by easier, because this is no easy game by any means. As with the previous game, you can only save as many times as typewriter ribbons you have collected. You also still have limited ammo, and those zombies and other assorted monsters don't take too kindly to your presence in their mansion.
