Ups: Stunning visuals, excellent audio, enjoyable gameplay.

Downs: Gameplay hasn't progressed all that much, some frame rate issues, a little short.

Bottom Line: When it comes to Star Wars videogames Rogue Leader sits right at the top. A fantastic package of sublime graphics, fantastic audio and great gameplay. Gamecube owners, you need this game.

SO HOW DOES ROGUE Squadron play? Like it's predecessor, it makes full use of Nintendo's wonderful controller design. The game's elegant control solution is easy to pickup extremely quickly and offers some very nice little touches. Controlling your craft is done via the analogue stick with the A and B buttons operating your weapons. The d-pad can be used to issue your fellow pilots with commands while the Y button brings up a targeting computer (this is optional and real Jedis will, of course, use the force). What is great is that it doesn't take long before you will have the control system well under control so you can be weaving through ties, dodging laser fire while at the same time co-ordinating your wingman.
The control system is very much an arcade model. Don't come looking for the depth seen in titles like X-Wing. The various ships in the game do handle in different ways but they all feel a little 'light'. Thrills, spills and fast paced action are the name of the game though and Factor 5 obviously wanted to deliver an accesible control system rather than a more 'realistic' simulation model to thrill the anal retentive Star Wars audience ... and good on them!
Like Rogue Squadron there are a variety of different scenarios in Rogue Leader with each one requiring a specific vehicle to do the best job of completing it. Bombing runs require the use of the Y-Wing, high speed dog-fights are best resolved with the zippy A-Wing and for general assault missions chances are you'll be piloting your trusty X-Wing. The missions aren't quite as varied as the original Rogue Squadron but they are a damn site more authentic. In our opinion Rogue Leader is the best "you're in the movie" Star Wars game on the market. Each mission can be tied directly to events in the classic trilogy and some are torn straight from the films (Assault on the Death Star, The Battle of Endor and The Battle of Hoth).
While there are plenty of extras to unlock and challenges to pursue, Rogue Leader is still a short game. It won't take long before most gamers have saved the day and put to bed all the games main missions. Keen players will of course want to unlock everything and get a gold medal in each mission which we can assure is a serious challenge. We would have liked to seen a few more missions in the game but that's mainly because the gameplay is so enjoyable and we're big fat Star Wars gluttons.
