Ups: Crazy effects, arcade action, relatively easy to pick up and go.

Downs: Not sure whether it wants to be a realistic or arcade soccer game, muted commentary.

Bottom Line: Redcard is a solid soccer title which suffers from not knowing what it wants to be. It offers an entertaining arcade soccer experience but could be so much more.

THE PACKAGING FOR REDCARD pretty much states what Acclaim are trying to achieve with their edgy arcade soccer title. It features a football player administering the famed "gonad grab" to a member of his opposition. Luckily the pained look of the hapless victim shouldn't be your expression after playing Redcard.
There seem to be three camps when it comes to sports games. There are those who like the shiny, polished official titles with the accurate and up to date rosters of players, the hardcore who want a swag of options and gameplay bordering on simulation, and those who want simple arcade action. Acclaim have the final group firmly in their sights with Redcard.
Unfortunately the gameplay in Redcard is a little schizophrenic because of one issue ... the ref. Essentially you set the level of the ref's strictness using a sliding bar but unless the strictness is completely off the ref is extremely pedantic making the game a rather turgid affair. When it is set to off the gameplay opens a bit more and there is some fun to be had. With the ref strictness off dodgy play is the name of the game. Play like a mongrel and you'll be rewarded for it.
