Redcard

(continued)

advertisement
With the strictness turned down you do get a reasonable soccer game from Redcard but it doesn't really distinguish itself from other games on the market. It's not really arcadey enough to be a pick up and play addictive experience that you'll keep coming back to and it's not realistic enough to appeal to the truly hardcore. There are nifty arcade style features like being able to "boost" your players and do turbo moves but it's just not quite as much as fun as it could have been. A real rough and tumble soccer experience with some solid gameplay would really stand out in the current market.

Visually Redcard is pretty good. The player models are reasonably detailed but extremely well animated. When they pull off sliding tackles and the special goal scoring moves you'll really notice how much work has been put into their movement. There are also some nice effects when you score a goal. The stadia are well realised but do lack a bit in the crowd department.

For a game that is supposed to be a hi-octane arcade sports experience the commentary in Redcard is unbelievably sedate. This could be part of the reason why the games feels a little staid. If the commentators were pulling off some wacky calls and generally getting the player hyped it could have provided a bit more excitement. Instead you get commentary that ignores the bizarre happenings on the field and sounds like coverage of the Taihape Over 60s social league. In game sound effects and crowd noise are fine but not really anything to get too worked up over.

The concept behind Redcard is great and with a little tweaking it could get there. Unfortunately in this incarnation it falls between the cracks of not being serious enough to foot it with the big boys and not "arcadey" enough to stand on its own. The gameplay is almost there, the graphics are pretty much spot on but its the attitude which suffers the most. It should be an all out arcade blast of serious fun but it just doesn't cut it when it comes to the crunch. Lets hope that we see another Redcard title because with a bit of work it could be great.
