By samoht (26 July 2002) 2 comments

Summary
Zoo Tycoon: Dino Digs

Ups: Dinosaurs! Adds some flair and excitement to the original, entertaining chaos when your animals escape.

Downs: No real changes to the gameplay, slightly ordinary visuals.

Bottom Line: Expansion packs are always aimed at fans of the original and Dino Digs is no different. It adds a some nice, fun features and expands on the enjoyable gameplay of Zoo Tycoon.

Overall rating: 3 out of 5 fists   Good

A LOT OF YOU might have sailed right past the original Zoo Tycoon so the Dino Digs expansion is a good opportunity to find out a bit more about one of Microsoft's more whimsical franchises. Zoo Tycoon was a tidy little economic management game and the expansion adds a bit more excitement to the mix but introducing a bevy of prehistoric terrors to your Zoo.

The basic scenario in Dino Digs is that cloning technology (much like that seen in Jurassic Park) has reached the point where living Dinosaurs can be produced in your labs. Of course there is tremendous potential to make some dollars as well as further your scientific reputation so you're newly cloned beasties are packed up and put in the Zoo. Of course caring for a giant reptile capable of swallowing a human whole is a slightly different proposition to setting up a new hippopotamus enclosure so there are a host of new problems to face. Dino Digs has a number of new scenarios to play through which will test your skills at crowd-pleasing.

There are more than twenty prehistoric creatures making an appearance in Dino Digs and as they are based on 'real' dinosaurs there is plenty of variety. Looking after the smaller creatures isn't too much of a chore as the same skills and techniques from the main game can be employed. There are some differences of course but they are really just slightly bigger lizards. The real challenge is when you start to mess with the big boys. The Tyrannosaurus Rex is a cantankerous beast who requires serious care and attention. This guy has a tendency to start demolishing his own enclosure if he isn't one hundred percent happy!
