Monsters Inc - Scare Island

By (21 February 2002)

Summary
Monsters Inc - Scare Island

Ups: Great for younger gamers, graphically appealing, great detailed levels, nice originality in-game.

Downs: A little too repetitive too soon, not enough to keep you interested for long periods of time.

Bottom Line: If youre looking for something that will entertain for a little while, Monsters Inc is great, but Epic this game just isnt.

Overall rating: 2.5 out of 5 fists   Mediocre

PRIMORDIAL OOZE. SOUND INTERESTING? If you're ready for something a little whacky and 'out there' and you are not too concerned about what your family might think when your done, then Monsters Inc - Scare Island could be the PS2 experience you've been looking for. And If your'e a fan of the movie, all the better.

Basically Monsters Inc - Scare Island is a game made for the person who really enjoys putting reality aside for a little while. Whilst the whole concept behind this game may be a tad far-fetched, somehow you are left with the feeling that whackiness and weirdness is part of this game's appeal. The exciting thing about Monsters Inc is that not only does it include some nifty cut scenes taken directly from the Disney Movie, but the two main characters Sulley and Mike bring a certain humour and 'feel' to the game that would otherwise leave Monsters Inc lacking.

If you like to start a game by following the instructions, take a note of this important game tip: make sure you turn the volume down or you skip the narration entirely if youre planning to complete the Orientation. It's not that the Orientation is badly created, it's just that the narration through-out the duration of it suddenly becomes extremely annoying. Not quite sure what Disney Interactive intended on doing with a voice that sounds like a cross between Grover from Sesame Street and Kermit the Frog. If Disney were aiming for humour here they really missed by a long shot.

That said, the majority of Monsters Inc: Scare Island is really kinda fun. The main object of the game is to complete all 15 levels with each level having its own share of challenges set aside for the would be Monster. Scare Island or more importantly the Monster Academy is a place where all Monsters go to be trained in the art of, well, scaring people. Seem kinda weird? It is, but read on.
