For the more seasoned adventurer, DaoC offers the ability for PvP (Player vs. Player) interactivity on every server. As opposed to games like EverQuest, this aspect of the game may appeal to those players who welcome a change to 'player vs. mob' game play. The option of fighting other players adds a little bit of realism to the gaming experience. Other games have offered this idea in the past, but only as an option of game play on separate servers dedicated to PvP. With DAoC Mythic have managed to integrate PvP play on each server to offer all players the choice of hunting down other players as opposed to limiting play to just killing mobs and various NPC's. Now that's pretty exciting stuff! In addition to the PvP game-play, players from the same realm cannot harm each other, and subsequently players from other realms are natural enemies of players from your own. It has to be said that whilst other games may leave you wanting for a change, DAoC manages to deliver those changes in one neat little package.
And what of Magic? Magic as in every RPG is a must-have. The magic system in DAoC is more simplified and easy to follow. One major aspect of magic in DAoC is how players obtain their spells. Finding enough funds to keep your spell book looking healthy has always been a challenge. DAoC gives magic-users a long awaited break from being broke all of the time. Having enough cash to buy the items you really need instead of having to spend all your money on spells is pretty cool. As you progress in level you are rewarded with spells automatically. No fuss with finding money or begging from fellow guild members, and being able to level and not worry about killing and looting just to survive in the game will be a welcome change for many players who lean towards the Arcane. The only drawback for magic-lovers is the fact that DAoC has put more emphasis on casters being able to melee as well as cast spells. During earlier levels you will find yourself relying heavily on your staff/weapon for gaining experience.
Meeting a morbid end in DAoC is very different to other RPG's. Upon reaching 5th level your character will need to be adept at either making friends with a lot of Clerics or skilled in the art of prayer. There are two ways you may be resurrected once you have died. One is to obtain the assistance of a friendly Cleric to resurrect you (this will require a Cleric who has reached high enough level to cast the resurrection spell) and the other is to simply type /release where you will re-spawn at your bind point and a gravestone will be resurrected in the area where you died. In order to gain all of your lost experience, you will need to return to your gravestone and pray to complete the resurrection. On one hand this offers players an opportunity to gather all their experience back (in some games you can't do this any other way other than killing mobs or doing quests) but on the other hand it can also delay the game some-what if you tend to die quite often.
DAoC is an RPG that allows more flexibility with spells for classes who use magic, allows each and every player the opportunity to integrate PvP play into their adventures, an expansive questing system that offers players a change from simple 'hack and slash' game-play and the opportunity to adventure around well-known locales of myth and legend. If RPG's are your kind of thing, Mythic have definitely delivered the goods in DAoC. If you've been feeling bored to tears with current MMORPG's, then perhaps spending some time in historic Dark Age Europe is just what the doctor ordered. Whether you are parading through Camelot as a valiant Knight returning from a great quest, or hunting down the likes of pesky Kobolds looking to invade your territory from across the Midgard Sea, DAoC is the game for the true adventurer at heart.
