Ups: Better graphics than the arcade version; gameplay never gets boring with all-out action; the Namco Guncon (or Guncon 2) is still the most accurate light gun on the market.

Downs: Not particularly interactive, the game runs on rails; light gun game fanatics who played through the arcade version will probably find the game too easy; very poor voice acting.

Bottom Line: Admirable attempt by Namco to convert and improve an older light gun arcade game. People who dislike light gun games won't find anything here that will sway their interest.

LIGHT GUN GAMES HAVE been few and far between on most game consoles throughout the last decade or so, and the only company to really shine through in the genre for the original PlayStation was Namco. Namco are now reintroducing their famous light gun, the Guncon, to the PlayStation 2 with the sequel to Time Crisis. Time Crisis 2 is actually an improvement over the aging arcade version, and it supports both the original Guncon and the new USB-based Guncon 2.
Namco seem to have realised that while a perfect conversion of Time Crisis 2 was going to prove particularly simple to create for PS2, many gamers are actually wanting a marked improvement in graphical content to show off what their PlayStation 2 can do. The developers of this game wisely decided that a straightforward conversion would not be enough and have increased the graphical content remarkably. All the textures appear to have been sharpened and the main characters (and their opponents) now have much smoother animation as well as more detail overall. Time Crisis 2 might not look quite as lovely as House of the Dead 2 on the Dreamcast, but otherwise those who favour eye candy should be fairly pleased.
Those gamers who have already played the original Time Crisis (or even one of Sega's House of the Dead series) will know not to expect anything in the way of a cohesive storyline. Effectively all one needs to know is that there a large corporation wanting to use military satellites to take over the world, you have a gun, and there are many people shooting at you. A simple premise that should appeal to light gun game fanatics all over the globe. Of course there is also a woman to rescue, which should succeed in getting all the rough male-types striking their most heroic poses before playing.
