Graphically, Madden NFL 2002 has had some noticeable improvements but nothing that will set it too far apart from its predecessor. The most publicized improvement has been to the eyes and facial detail on each of the players. Rather than staring a hole through your soul the eyes of the players appear to be far more realistic than they did last year, and the facial textures have been smoothed out for extra realism. Some extra animations and activities have been added to the sideline too and it is still as fun as ever to see the first down marker boy go sprawling as you run a group a players straight over the top of him. The coaches also still have their usual arm-waving antics, although whether the real-life coaches will appreciate the realistic attention to detail on their beer guts is another story entirely.
Commentary and sound effects are always a major point with Madden games and EA Sports have made sure the commentators are the same from last year's Madden title. There are some voice clips that appear to have been reused from Madden NFL 2001, but this time John Madden and Pat Summerall have alot more to say about the players themselves and you can actually learn some interesting information about the newer players in the NFL this year (even Leslie has more to talk about than just repeating the same sentence about Zen Masters). The sound effects still contain the usual crunching, crowd noises and cries of anguish that has come to be expected from a Madden game, which should satisfy fans of the series.
As for the gameplay, don't expect it to be any difference from last year's game. This in itself is actually a good thing, as last year's Madden title was superb. The CPU AI is quite respectable, however if you find it too easy (or too difficult) you can customise how well each team can perform certain skills (running, blocking, passing etc). The players can certainly seem a little sluggish to react at times, but this is due to the momentum based gameplay which is designed to allow your running backs or receivers to drive further through a tackle if they have managed to obtain a good running speed.
While EA Sports have only made a few improvements over Madden NFL 2001, fans of the series should be extremely pleased with the new customisable team and create-a-player modes, as well as the improved graphical touches. About the only major complaint anyone can make towards Madden NFL 2002 is that it is perhaps too similar to its predecessor, so those players who already own the 2001 edition may feel short changed if they buy this game. If you are in that boat, rent it first - most will still agree that it warrants the purchase, as it is the definitive Madden title. |
