Ups: The graphics move very quickly and create an excellent sense of speed; Easy control system; The game is just incredibly fun to play.

Downs: May not go into enough depth for simulation buffs; The preloading suspension is not usually necessary to win; Tracks can look a little sparse at times.

Bottom Line: Definitely a must for people who love arcade-style racing. Simulation fans might find it a little lacking, but still a big thumbs up though.

ABOUT THE ONLY CONTACT New Zealanders have with ATV racing is tearing about the Uncle's farm on the 4-wheel quad dragging the hay trailer. Overseas however there is a large following for ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) racing and stunt championships and it is this that Rainbow Studios (the creators of Motocross Madness on the PC) are seeking to emulate in their latest offering, ATV Offroad. It may not be an accurate simulation of the ATV Championships of America, but it is definitely high on the fun factor stakes.
The first thing you will notice when entering the game (or the excellent practice mode) is the simple and yet well-designed control system. Controlling a quad is very much like riding a motocross bike but which the extra stability provided by the 4 wheels. The game appears to simulate the physics of the ATVs quite well too, and while they ride wonderfully along most terrain, a harsh landing at the wrong angle will send your rider flying through the air before crashing to the ground in an uncompromising heap.
This sort of game is very dependant on good track design, so its with much elation that I can say the developers have done an excellent job. Not only are the tracks gorgeous to look at (even though a couple of them are rather sparse dirt-related affairs) each bump and turn accurately models the physics you would expect to encounter in real life racing. Players must always be focused on keeping up the speed of their ATV (this is a great game for those who love to hold down the acceleration button constantly) and must also judge the angles of their jumps in order to land safely and prepare themselves for any upcoming ramps or turns.
