Dennis himself also has a few good moves up his sleeve and is able to climb, shimmy, roll and jump a number of obstacles. His coolest move involves a small belt clip he has, which he can attach to the mesh on some ceilings and hang there whilst blasting away at the creatures below. In true Solid Snake-style he can also crawl into ventilation shafts for shortcuts or necessary detours. Along the way Dennis will meet up with a former colleague, a roving reporter (who keeps getting trapped in bad situations), a computer programmer and the last survivors of his own team. These characters must all work together to destroy (and preferably escape from) the Antarctic base before the biological plague of creatures takes it over completely. Mixed in with the shooting action are many puzzles that really don't get much more complex than those found in Capcom's Resident Evil series.
Graphically the game can be bland but can also be stunning. The graphics are sharp, fast and smooth, and the camera angles are respectable and can be manipulated manually to get the best view required. The water effects in the game are amazing including cascading waterfalls and "Abyss"-style morphing liquid creatures. When trekking about outside the base there is also one of the best snowstorm effects I've ever seen in a game, and coupled with some atmospheric sound effects it really does make you feel chilly to be out there. Dennis can also cop some damage outside if he doesn't find a thermal jacket to wear, so the effect isn't just purely cosmetic.
Sony can be proud of a job well-done with Extermination, and while it doesn't beat a Capcom game for it's survival horror scare-factor it brings back the feel of Fade to Black, one of the best 3D adventures of yesteryear. There's a fair few hours of game play to be had too, so should provide a longer game than what is usually on offer from this genre. Extermination is a great combination of action, puzzle-solving, horror and science fiction coupled with nice graphics and some great visual effects.
