Fear Effect 2 Retro Helix

(continued)

Firepower, you got to love it, and it's all here. From pistols, uzi's, rocket launchers, to the huge chain gun that is reminiscent of ED-209 from Robocop, and you get to control it. Although only for a brief time, there is no better feeling of destruction then smashing though a wall and annihilating the enemies. The controls in the game work very well in normal situations, square and circle cycle through the inventory and triangle selects, yet in a heated battle it's not uncommon to cycle past the desired weapon when running out of ammo on the currently used one. That is probably the only gripe with the controls. There is a useful roll, L2, and 180 turn around, L1, which are implemented well. One thing worth a mention is the loading times, there are practically none in the game. Movement from room to room blends well with the game play and doesn't leave you waiting while the door opens ala Resident Evil, as the levels/rooms are streamed off the disk. Don't get me wrong, this is a good thing as nothing is worse then choosing a wrong door by mistake, waiting for it to load, then back stepping and loading again.

The graphics, although pre-rendered and streamed off the disc as previously mentioned, work extremely well, although in some rooms there is an invisible barrier preventing you from going that little bit further so in some cases, as good as a room looks, it feels square. There aren't too many places like that but worth a mention so you know what to expect. The sound is also very atmospheric, and gives you an eerie feeling in some parts, especially in the games later levels.

One level worth mentioning, which you come across a little later in the game, is an old Chinese excavation site. In some parts you meet a ghostly figure that, although sounds like he's not making sense, has some vital clues, then suddenly you appear in a different time period and are faced with a puzzles to which the ghost gave a clue. Very cool.

So to wrap it up, what we have here is a game chock full of action, babes, guns, violence, puzzles and a fantastic story that really grabs the player and doesn't let go until the final showdown. If you are a fan of games like Dino Crisis and Resident Evil, then add this to your collection, sure there are some minor niggles in the game, but they are outweighed by all the positives.
