Ups: Awesome gameplay with 250 tracks to choose from and a 1-8 player championship. The Kudos system is also original.

Downs: Not enough hours in the day to play.

Bottom Line: One of the most remarkable games in the genre. Breathtaking speed and an experience to match. Always something to come back to and improve on.

WELL THE WAIT IS over, MSR has finally arrived. Having been in the making since before the DC's release, there has been a lot riding (pun intended) on this title. Originally planned as a street racer with the odd real life landmark dotted around the track, it ended up being one of the most ambitious titles ever. Now before we get too deep in the review there is one thing that must be said. This game ROCKS! From the moment the intro plays you know your in for something special. The menu pops up and you are then given options such as view your garage, Street race, quick race and yes the internet option is available. The first thing you must do after logging in your players info is choose a car. There are three to choose from in the beginning but more will become available as you finish chapters (more on this later).
Once you've picked your desired car you must challenge for it, which usually involves beating a set lap time on a track chosen for that particular car. After a few laps have been done and the car is yours, it's stored in the garage of which there are three garages so you can only own up to three cars early on in the game, but as the game progresses you will eventually be able to own up to six. Customisable options are available for the newly won car such as change the colour (from a real manufacturers choice), the licence plate (yes you too can now have that rude plate that you were too scared to order) and of course if it's a soft top what time of day the top is up or down.
Now onto the racing. There are twenty five chapters to race in each one consisting of ten challenges plus hidden ones if you think your good enough. The first chapter is rather simple as it just introduces you to the handling of the vehicles and the different types of races there are, which range from best lap, set top speed, average lap time and of course no racing game would be complete without a mini championship. There are three different cities to race in each one containing around 80 different tracks over three suburbs. The cities are London, Tokyo and San Francisco. Of course don't think that's all the tracks are daytime. Each track can be raced in day or night which all depends on what time you play. For example, if your in NZ and you want to race in London during the day it will have to be 8pm here as they are 12hrs behind. |
