Medal of Honor: Underground

By (12 January 2001)

Summary
Medal of Honor: Underground

Ups: Highly playable stealth-based action; sound effects and music are extremely atmospheric; excellent AI; shooting Nazis is fun.

Downs: Visuals have not been improved from the original game; very short graphical horizon; split-screen mode is still restrictive.

Bottom Line: Great stuff. This one is tense, atmospheric and just simply fun to play. Achtung! Buy Now!

Overall rating: 3.5 out of 5 fists   Very Good

WHAT DO YOU DO with a title that can't possibly get any better on the current console that it is designed for, and yet there is such a huge demand for a sequel that there is no way you can possibly pass up the opportunity to create a second game? It would seem that Dreamworks Interactive have decided to go with the "more of the same" idea, but have kept Medal of Honor: Underground with the feel of originality by changing its main character, plot and setting.

Anyone who played the first game will remember the character Manon Batiste, a female member of the French Underground who was one of the more important allies of the British. MOH2 portrays her own personal war against the Germans, as well as covering a whole collection of historical information that makes the game seem more realistic (in that it feels like all the fighting has a purpose). Eventually the player will find themselves once again teamed up with the OSS in the war against the Nazis, and many gamers would agree when its said and done that there's nothing quite as fun as shooting the evil denizens of Hitler.

The gameplay engine used in this game is virtually identical to the original, as is the mission structure. The player must proceed through each level, slowly collecting a small arsenal of guns, grenades and molitov cocktails, in order to succeed at whatever objectives the current mission requires. Each assignment will usually have multiple objectives, and to proceed through the game the player will need to be successful with all of them (most levels can't be completed until every objective is met), as well as ritually mowing down Germans around every corner.
