Ups: Quick pace, easy controls, excellent visuals; More wrestlers; More modes than you can shake a stick at.

Downs: No commentary; Might be time to record some new wrestling sound effects, these ones are getting old; Some of the faces don't look like the real-life wrestlers.

Bottom Line: This is the best wrestling game available for PS One, but there's still some room for improvement.

WRESTLING FANS CAN UNITE once again for yet another instalment of THQ's Smackdown series. Whilst WWF Smackdown! 2: Know Your Role is nothing new in comparison to the original title, it still changes and improves enough elements to make it the best wrestling game available on PS One to date. Most fans will be asking the question of whether the game is worth buying if you already own the original WWF Smackdown, and that answer is a firm yes (if you're a true wrestling fan that is). Include an enormous (and very updated) roster of wrestling superstars and almost every match type you could possibly want and you begin to understand why this game feels like the most "complete" wrestling title ever released.
Graphically WWFSM2 is as crisp as ever. The polygon models used for each character are smooth and nicely animated (although typically there are still a couple of superstar faces that don't really look like the real wrestler). This is one of those titles that you can watch from the other side of a room and swear someone is viewing an actual wrestling match (much like the soccer games designed by EA Sports). A nice touch which always impresses me with this game engine is how the developers have managed to take over 50 combatants and yet match their proportionate size to each other perfectly, unlike older wrestling games in which everyone was the same height.
The arenas themselves are also impressive, especially when you decide to take the battle backstage. There are so many rooms behind the scenes that you may be lucky to find yourself back to the ring, but the main highlight of this is obviously the availability of weapons. There are all sorts of things lying about for you to pick up and smack over the head of your unsuspecting opponent (or at least smash their head into them), such as tables, chairs, sofas, drink machines, cars and even a forklift! The crowd is also well done, and while its animation pales in comparison to the wrestlers, their main feature is holding up signs that are specific to whichever wrestler is in the ring at the time. A nice touch indeed.
