Speedball 2100

By Cam (27 November 2000)

Summary
Speedball 2100

Ups: Very much like the originals; A shift to 3D character animations; Lots of competitions and player setup options.

Downs: Still very much like the originals; No new gameplay elements; Shift to 3D makes the game appear to run slower then its predecessors.

Bottom Line: Well it's back, if you loved the originals you'll find this will be like slipping back into those comfy old loafers you have lieing around. However, if you have been waiting for something new to come with this update you will most likely be disappointed. It's Speedball alright, and just as we know it, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it's not as we hoped it would be after waiting this long.

Overall rating: 2.5 out of 5 fists   Mediocre

BEING THE SEQUEL TO one of the most popular futuristic sports games in the 80's meant that the expectations for a game like Speedball 2100 where huge. The creators of the original games and the developers for this update, the Bitmap Brothers, were going to have to make it something special to appease all the fans that have been waiting over 10 years for a sequel.

Unfortunately although this game retains a lot of its predecessor's attributes, it may not be enough to satisfy those who loved the original Speedball 1&2 and were waiting for something new and revolutionary.

By moving to 3D the game has suffered somewhat. At first glance the game still appears the same, the big armoured players are there, it's still a solid steel ball and it's all played in a giant metal arena. It also has the same raw brutality of the original, it's still a no-holds barred free for all, if you get in the ball carriers way you better do something or your gonna be kissing the floor.

However when playing the game, things just aren't right, the main factor that's missing is the speed, the gameplay has been slowed down somewhat, and although still a fast game by nature, it doesn't have the real boiler room pressure anymore. This is what made the originals so exciting, the fact that a goal could be scored within a matter of seconds if the right passes and blocks where executed correctly.

The scoring is still the same, with points awarded by either getting your ball in the oppositions goal or one of the many different bonus points on the walls. The arenas that the matches are played are on actually reasonably well done, and show a good amount of detail.
