Formula One 2000

By (7 November 2000)

Summary
Formula One 2000

Ups: Great graphics; Great sound; Great gameplay; Updated rosters and cars for the latest season of the F1 World Championship.

Downs: Graphics, sound and gameplay is almost identical the Formula One 99 (which isn't actually a bad thing, but there's no massive improvements); No real incentive to own this one if you already have F1 99.

Bottom Line: It's definitely a great game, but everything on offer here has already been done before. It may be time for Psygnosis to move on to some new innovations in the racing genre.

Overall rating: 3.5 out of 5 fists   Very Good

EVER SINCE THE PLAYSTATION was first released Psygnosis have been responsible for some of the best moments the console has had in the past. These moments include the Formula One series of racing games, the latest of which is imaginatively entitled Formula One 2000. With an excellent benchmark to work upon in the previous games of the series it's quite hard to go wrong when you're already responsible for the best Formula One game available for the PlayStation, so it's nice to see Psygnosis have still got what it takes.

The graphics are probably about as good as we are ever going to see in a PlayStation F1 game without slowing the game down, and it's nice to see the vehicles are still accurately modelled on their real-life counterparts, as are the tracks. The frame rate is still extremely smooth and quick, which lends itself to the enormous feeling of speed the player will experience whilst flying full-tilt down the straightaways. The developers have also kept in the nice little touches they have become known for, such as sparks licking out from beneath the cars, and flying gravel as the player loses precious seconds skirting the edge of the track after bungling a passing manoeuvre.

If you have played the previous games in this series then you will be immediately familiar with the control system, as there really haven't been any innovative changes for this year's game. This isn't particularly disappointing though because the controls have always been excellent so there wasn't really anything to improve in the first place. The cars handle realistically, but for those players who need a helping hand there are some assistance modes included, which help you with automatic braking and cornering. In order to truly succeed at this game though you will need to learn when to brake, and to overtake, and when to put the foot down on the gas.
