NHL 2001

By (1 November 2000)

Summary
NHL 2001

Ups: Excellent presentation shows EA's usual attention to detail; Very fast and frantic gameplay makes the game feel like real ice hockey; Great sound effects and awesome commentary.

Downs: Graphical detail has been sacrificed a little to keep the frame rate up; Control system is quite simplistic, which may put off some simulation fans.

Bottom Line: Could be considered the best the of EA Sport's PlayStation ice hockey titles, it depends of whether you prefer graphics or gameplay. If it's gameplay you want, then this is your game.

Overall rating: 4 out of 5 fists   Great

HOCKEY FANS CERTAINLY HAVEN'T had much to complain about over the years as far as video gaming is concerned. Since the late 90s there've been some great titles released for the sport on various different gaming systems, and the PlayStation has been especially flooded with good hockey games. The latest offering from EA Sports, NHL 2001, doesn't do much more to improve an excellent genre, but instead sticks to tried and tested gameplay with updated player rosters and a few tweaks in the graphics department. What it all adds up is yet another satisfying hockey experience from the developers at Electronic Arts.

EA's recipe for success over the years has included some excellent TV-style presentation and polish in their sporting titles, and NHL 2001 delivers this in spades. From the outset the player is bombarded with a great looking (and very practical) interface and options menu, and when actually in a game you will be treated to some of the best commentary heard in any sports game released thus far. Everything in the game appears to have been produced to convince the player that they are taking part in a real hockey tournament, and it's good to see that this particular title succeeds in what it sets out to do.

To make NHL 2001 even more authentic EA have made sure they have included all the Stanley Cup teams (including the new expansion teams), as well as a good number of international teams as well. After selecting your favoured team the player will then experience one of best control systems we've seen over the years, and while it appears simplistic at first the real quality behind it lies with its accurate collision detection and realistic physics engine. The game also goes a long way in recreating realistic score-lines, unlike some titles that will either become goal-fests or which will hardly allow any goals to be scored due to invincible goaltenders.
