Ups: Fun, puzzle-oriented gameplay, not unlike the classic game Dig Dug; Multiple modes including arcade, time trial and survival.

Downs: Graphics and sound appear dated in comparison to other titles released in the last three years; The game doesn’t last, once you’ve beaten it there’s no reason to keep playing; No multiplayer mode.

Bottom Line: A nice try by the developers to rekindle the flame of addictive puzzle titles, but these days even this genre needs a little more flair and variety. The lack of a multiplayer option is also unforgivable.

MANY GAMERS STILL REMEMBER the days when one megabyte of RAM was considered a lot, and games themselves concentrated on playability rather than graphical content. It was back in these times that the puzzle genre was still strong, but in today's market there is sadly little room left for simple puzzle games. Sure, games such as the Tomb Raider series and Metal Gear Solid throw in the odd puzzle here and there, but there really aren't that many games around that drive the player to think hard before they act. Mr Driller appears to be out to change all that, and has tossed aside graphical finesse and opted for simplistic, addictive, puzzle-based fun. Unfortunately along with the fun the game has also brought a fair share of faults.
The first thing that will grate your nerves is the intro movie. The story is rounded out during this cut-scene and basically explains that coloured blocks are overrunning the city, and that it's your job to drill through these blocks before the town is swamped. Not only is the concept idiotic but it appears to be aimed at children, and like Sony's Vib Ribbon this may turn off some adult players, and yet the game itself can be far too difficult for youngsters.
The gameplay resembles the classic game Dig Dug, but instead of digging down through dirt you must drill through various coloured blocks. Every time a block is destroyed then any blocks positioned on top of it fall down, causing a small avalanche if there was a pile of multiple blocks above. The aim of the game is to dig down a certain distance in a limited amount of time, with both gravity and a limited air supply being increasingly difficult obstacles to overcome. There are also some annoying brown blocks with the letter 'X' marked on them (Xboxes?), which need extra effort to drill through which causes your oxygen to run out quicker. All these various hazards add to the puzzle element of the game, as an enormous amount of strategy is required for the player to dig even the smallest of holes in the time required.
