A GAMER KNOWS WHEN he is preparing for some exciting action when you play a game that starts off with an FMV intro full of dangerous though impressive stunts. Some of the foolhardy moves that these professional skateboarders perform would make Jackie Chan proud. Unfortunately the grunge music track that accompanies the intro, while fitting the intended image perfectly, may grate on some peoples nerves a bit. No matter what you think of the soundtrack though, there's no mistaking this game for anything other than Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 (TH2), a title that we know many of you have been awaiting for with eager anticipation for some time now.
In short, TH2 is a terrific skateboarding game, and definitely a genre-winner on the PlayStation. The game leaves Grind Session (as well as its own predecessor) in the dust with superior gameplay, visuals and level design being brought to the fore. Some fans of the original may also claim that TH2 has better music, but I will reserve judgement on this seeing as I am more a fan of the sport of skateboarding than I am of the aural delights that skateboarders listen to. For those wondering what type of soundtrack I'm referring to, the music includes songs by Papa Roach, Anthrax, Rage Against the Machine, Naughty by Nature, Chuck D, Bad Religion, Powerman 5000, Millencolin, The High & Mighty, Mos Def & Mad Skillz, Dub Pistols, Lagwagon, Styles of Beyond, Consumed, Fu Manchu, Alley Life, Swingin' Utters and Born Allah. Impressive isn't it?
As far as the gameplay is concerned in TH2, expect more of the same easy controls that were the highlight of the first game (its one of those games you can just pick up and play) but with the addition of reams of new moves. Each character also has an array of special moves based on something they do in real life, which is a great bonus to those who follow the sport. As well as extra abilities the characters get the opportunity to skate in a large collection of levels, all of which are extremely impressive and well designed. Some of these levels are huge too, and it will take some time to explore and learn all the possible tricks for each. Various areas based on different parts of America offer all assortments of pipes, half pipes, rails, props, barrels and ledges in order to perform tricks on and around, and even a novice can pick up a controller and feel like they are doing some cool stunts.
