Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2

(continued)

The game is definitely a treat on the eye, and while the ageing PlayStation cannot avoid some polygon warping around the walls, any clipping and seaming is kept to a minimum. The actual textures on the scenery are far better than the first game, with more detail and style on offer. As the characters have also been made larger this time their animations look smoother and more defined, allowing for each skater to look more like their real-life counterpart. If you look carefully you can even see the official shoe licenses and trademark logos on the clothing of each character. The in-game camera is also brilliantly designed, and follows the action perfectly without the player becoming confused by the way it swings back and forth to cover the best view of the level.

It's hard to know what else to say about TH2 that many of you don't already know. In fact we can dare to say that many of the true skateboarding fans out there have already bought this game, and are probably playing it right now. If by some miracle some of you are actually reading this review, then you are most likely thinking about how many superb things about this game that I have forgotten to mention.

If I was to find a few criticisms of TH2 they would probably lie along the lines of discovering what moves you can and cannot do. For the most part it is still trial and error, and the game manual is anything but helpful in learning how to do those moves deemed more fun. Many players who do not have staying power will never see some of the better combos available in the game, and this is indeed a shame. Saying that however, even an unskilled gamer can have a wild ride with TH2, and come away feeling like they have accomplished something.

These is no doubting it, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 is the best skateboarding game for the PlayStation, bar none. The original game was just a warm up, and Grind Session was merely a stocking filler in comparison to this mighty gift. With an international flavour (there are levels based in France and Mexico as well as The United States) this game is the ultimate in pro skateboarding action. With better graphics, bigger levels, more tricks, better animation and classic gameplay, what more can any budding fan ask for? Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 maybe?
