The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning hands-on

Developer: Krome Studios; Publisher: Sierra
Preview by Huntress (1 November 2006)

YOUNG SPYRO GOES IN search of his roots and we got to tag along for the ride!

Due for release on 7th November, The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning sees the cute purple dragon sticking it to hordes of brutish foes as a search for his origins escalates into something of an epic quest.

Developers Krome Studios, creators of Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, have been charged with breathing new life into the Spyro series for consoles and the Game Boy Advance (with Amaze Entertainment handling the Nintendo DS version). Krome has tackled this challenge on a couple of fronts: by shifting the focus from a platform game - albeit with combat and action elements, to a combat-based adventure; and by placing more emphasis on the storyline, which quickly develops into a saga of substance. At times we could almost believe we were watching some big budget animated movie rather than playing a video game.

Of course, no self-respecting animated movie would be complete without some Hollywood names on the list of credits. For this particular title Elijah Wood, David Spade and Gary Oldman have lent their voices to the game's three main characters. From what we heard, the actors all did a credible job playing their roles of hero-in-the-making, sidekick, and mentor respectively.

This time around Spyro has some new attacks up his... er... wing. As well as his assorted upgradeable breath weapons, he also boasts impressive ground-to-air melee combos and devastating, screen-clearing fury attacks in his arsenal. He's amped and he's dangerous; with a seemingly endless supply of aggressive enemies to defeat, he needs to be! There's also a new upgrade system which allows players to tailor Spyro's attacks to suit their liking.

The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning will be available on Xbox, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, GameCube and Game Boy Advance. Oh, and for those who need it, a Prima Game Guide will also be on offer to give Spyro fans a helping hand.

Game Features:

  • Non-stop explosive action
  • Combat & upgrade system allows increased power and variety of moves & attacks
  • Take to the skies as you battle ruthless enemies both in the air and on the ground
  • Action-packed boss battles
  • Epic story of Spyro's origins
