IF ANYONE DOUBTED THE ability of flight sims, especially high fidelity ones, to survive in the current gaming climate, surely all doubts were swept away with the unquestioned success of IL-2 Sturmovik and the expanded IL-2 Forgotten Battles. The excellent support offered has also helped to foster a large, passionate (and often turbulent, for want of a better word) community.

The franchise is about to get even stronger with the release of Aces Expansion, an add-on for Forgotten Battles that allows even more flyable planes, includes some graphic enhancements, updated physics and new maps. At only $27.95, this makes for a very reasonable expansion pack.

o what exactly do you get? There are 31 new flyable planes or variants including the famed P-51 Mustang, the German Bf-110, P-38 Lightning, and Japanese AM6 Zero. As a tip to the Battle of Britain sim scheduled for release next year are 4 variants of the renowned Spitfire and 2 Normandy maps.

There are also 8 new non-flyable planes and a host of added ground objects and ships. There are also several pointers to possible future expansions with the inclusion of the Japanese fighters, and a Pacific map that can be used online or by mission builders to create single missions.

To be honest, the expansion is a bit eclectic in the mix of new features, but that means it will probably have something to appeal to everyone. We think it is well worth it for the price, anyway.
