NEED FOR SPEED. THE title says it all. The series that is all about arcade racing action - and which has never failed to deliver on that premise - is making a break from familiar PC and console territory to the Game Boy Advance this month.
The Need for Speed games have always been about racing even after cops were added to the mix. You then had to avoid getting caught for speeding as you poured yet more injected gas into your hot engine, accelerating away to the finish like a demon. It's really a natural extension, then, to find the games branching out into the underground street racing scene - you know, that murky underbelly of society populated by boy racers. It's not just in NZ, of course - and thanks to EA's multiformat mindset, that world can soon be in your pocket.
Check out these features: -
- 20 fully customisable and licensed cars - from manufacturers you know, like Toyota, Subaru and Mitsubishi
- Several racing modes, Including Drag and Street (courses through the city, essentially)
- Hundreds of real, licenses aftermarket customising options - including Momo, Audiobahn, Skunk2 Racing, Neuspeed and many more
- Over 100 unique events, where you can earn the cash you need to customise or upgrade your ride
With a full 3D engine (check out the screenshots - this is not the sort of thing you would expect to see on GBA hardware!) and all the customisation options of its full-blooded console and PC cousins, NFS:U looks to have the goods. How it plays is, of course, a matter of wait and see, but the series has never failed to deliver, even despite our pretesting apprehensions at EA: Play last year. You'd be more than entitled to assume that this version will also have pace and intensity, another trademark of the series. Check out our full review once we get out mitts around the game when it releases this week.
