Bloody Roar Extreme

Developer: Hudson; Publisher: Atari
Preview by Gunner (27 November 2003)

AT LAST THE VERY popular Bloody Roar series makes it's debut on the Xbox.

Featuring many of the characters from the existing games in the series Konami promise this version will build on the power of the Xbox and provide visually stunning combatants with the unusual ability to transform into animal alter egos.

Playing over various 3D arenas players participate in one on one fights. Various combinations of punches, kicks and throws will be available to players, while all the while you charge up your special power bar to activate your animal alter ego. The 3D graphic style makes for some intensive fighting and backed by some cool graphic effects the fights promise to be real edge of your seat combat.

Once your power bar is up you can activate your morphing ability to change into your animal persona and open a whole new set of fighting moves and abilities. This is where the game will hope to step up above the rest of the pack by suddenly forcing players to change fighting styles mid game as it becomes beast on beast. There will be over a dozen fighters to choose from with some of the favourites such as Chimera, Phoenix and Lion making a welcome return form earlier games. There is also the promise of an Xbox exclusive character and hidden modes to unlock as you progress in the game.

Playing over 10 stages gamers will get to see the arenas fall apart about them as they are damaged as a result of the fighting. The concept of a destructible game environment will certainly add a lot more interest to the game as opposed to other games in the genre where the game environment is relegated to no more than a back drop. The game promises 7 different modes of play and a vast array of combination attack and counter moves. Like other games in the series it is likely to be one of those games that you will always come back to have just one more bash.

The game will ship with some impressive in game graphics made possible by the Xbox engine. Early screenshots show fight effects that give players the feel of the power and speed of the combat. So grab your pets and lets get ready to rumble!

Game features include:-

  • Fourteen fighters transform and fight as legendary creatures
  • Full 3D combat system with aerial juggles, counters, and chain combos
  • Unlock hidden game modes and an Xbox exclusive mystery fighter
  • Ten multi-level, interactive and destructible fighting arenas
Check out the screenshots and look out for the games local New Zealand release in early December.
