THE TEAM THAT BROUGHT us Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, perhaps the best WWII single player First Person Shooter, weren't content with their efforts. Re-forming into a new company, Infinity Ward, a large number of the 2015 developers seemed to think they could do even better. With an enhanced squad combat system, further tweaks to the Quake 3 engine and a much more involving storyline they aim to take us back to the largest conflict the world has seen yet.
You follow the progress of the war from three perspectives. You begin your missions as an American paratrooper on D-Day being dropped behind enemy lines to disrupt their supply, command and control structure before the invasion begins the next day. From there you progress through France eventually shifting perspective to that of a British Special Forces member. These are the people placed firmly in harms way and against terrible odds to do the jobs that simply had to be done. You can see from the screenshots that have been released this looks likely to include damn demolition as part of the efforts to disrupt the German industrial system producing the materiel for the war. Finally you will shift to a Russian perspective and fight on the Eastern Front helping with the fighting in Stalingrad to finally commanding tanks and engaging the German Armor as part of the push back to Berlin.
Although details on the exact missions are still being kept secret right now it does appear that a higher effort has been made to tell a story rather than the somewhat abrupt ending that Allied Assault suffered from. All in all we are promised twenty four missions ranging across the later three years of the war. Also improved is a better squad combat system that will see you issued orders and objectives from the sergeant in charge of your squad. The squad will then back you up and, based on the released demo, they seem to do a pretty decent job of it. Rounding out the package are promised multi-player modes.
Powering it all will be a tweaked version of the Quake 3 engine. Because computer hardware has progressed since this engine debuted we now have the capacity to have large numbers of soldiers animated at once allowing, as the screenshots show, quite large scale battles to be played out. It all looks quite exciting and a title to watch out for. Call of Duty is expected to reach New Zealand shores sometime in November, expect a full review shortly afterwards.
