TIRED OF WORLD WAR 2 as your war of choice? Want a little moral ambiguity in your fighting? Then Illusion Softworks may have just the thing for you with their latest game - Vietcong.
Featuring levels covered in lush foliage the recently released multi-player beta demo allows players to be either Vietcong fighters or Special Ops US Army rangers and square off in capture the flag, deathmatch or escort the pilot modes. Certainly the game world is a much greener and lush affair than we are normally used to seeing - almost a green overload. With army green or drab coloured Vietcong clothing the gameplay is less about direct assault and more about trying to see your enemy before they see you.
Combined with fairly realistic damage models, it has been tuned at a level where people survive for a little bit longer than you would expect in real life - you have a very distinct change of pace. Learn to fear snipers as they will make your life extremely short, conversely as a sniper your biggest fear is someone managing to get in close to you where your unweildy weapon is not much defence. The demo features just a few classes so the current 'sniper standoffs' that develop in matches should be easier to break when you have the ability to call in airstrikes and use heavier weaponry.
Still we like what we have seen thus far (be sure to follow the screenshot link below!). With the gaming world having gone crazy over Battlefield 1942 it is definitely interesting to see a more modern war brought into the gaming limelight. The full game, due for release in late February, promises an engrossing single player where you lead a squad into battle as well as the fairly fully featured multi-player component. Stay tuned for our full review.
